PIAA Football Ranking Formula & Tie-Breakers
The following is the chart used to calculate basic points for football.
Points are awarded for a WIN only.

Basic Points

Class AAAA

100 points for WIN over a Class AAAA opponent
 80 points for WIN over a Class AAA opponent
 60 points for WIN over a Class AA opponent
 40 points for WIN over a Class A opponent
Class AAA

120 points for WIN over a Class AAAA opponent
100 points for WIN over a Class AAA opponent
 80 points for WIN over a Class AA opponent
 60 points for WIN over a Class A opponent


Class AA

140 points for WIN over a Class AAAA opponent
120 points for WIN over a Class AAA opponent
100 points for WIN over a Class AA opponent
 80 points for WIN over a Class A opponent

Class A

160 points for WIN over a Class AAAA opponent
140 points for WIN over a Class AAA opponent
120 points for WIN over a Class AA opponent
100 points for WIN over a Class A opponent

Power Points

Team A picks up 10 points for every win its opponent earns, PROVIDING Team A has defeated Team B. Example: Hollidaysburg (AAAA)4-0 defeated Altoona (AAAA) 2-2 Hollidaysburg gets 100 basic points plus 20 power points because to-date Altoona has 2 wins. Obviously, the more wins your opponent earns during the season, the more power points your team will receive.

Tiebreakers

     Ties in the rankings (ratings) shall be resolved as follows:

     a) If the member school teams played each other during the regular season, the winner of the majority of those contests shall be ranked (rated) higher. HEAD TO HEAD

     b) If (a) does not resolve the tie in the rankings (ratings), the won-loss records of the tied members school teams against common regular season opponents shall be used in breaking the tie in the rankings (ratings) with ten points awarded for each win, five points awarded for each tie, and no points awarded for each loss. RECORD AGAINST COMMON REGULAR SEASON OPPONENTS

     c) If (b)  does not resolve the tie in the rankings (ratings), the won-loss-tie records of the tied member school teams for the regular season contests used in determining the rankings (ratings) shall be used in breaking the tie in the rankings (ratings) with ten points awarded for each win, five points awarded for each tie, and no points awarded for each loss.  RECORD AGAINST REGULAR SEASON OPPONENTS

     d) If (c) does not resolve the tie in the rankings (ratings), the winning percentage (divide number of contests won by number contests won and lost) of the tied member school teams' common regular season opponents shall be used in breaking the tie in the rankings (ratings). PERCENTAGE WINS AGAINST COMMON REGULAR SEASON OPPONENTS

     e) If (d) does not resolve the tie in the rankings (ratings), the winning percentage (divide number of contests won by number of contests won and lost) of the tied member school teams' regular season opponents used in determining the tie in the rankings (ratings). PERCENTAGE WINS AGAINST REGULAR SEASON OPPONENTS

     f) If (e) does not resolve the tie in the rankings (ratings), the team that yielded the fewest points when the member school teams played each other during the regular season shall be used in breaking the tie in the rankings (ratings). FEWEST POINTS YIELDED WHEN THEY PLAYED EACH OTHER

     g) If (f) does not resolve the tie in the rankings (ratings) , the fewest points yielded against the tied member school teams' common regular season opponents shall be used in breaking the tie in the rankings (ratings).

     h) If (g) does not resolve the tie in the rankings (ratings), the fewest points yielded against the tied member school teams' regular season opponents used in determining the rankings (ratings) shall be used in breaking the tie in the rankings (ratings)

     i) If (h) does not resolve the tie in the rankings (ratings), a coin toss shall be used in breaking the tie in the rankings (ratings).

     (1) If two schools are tied, one coin flip will determine the winner
     (2) If three schools are tied, the odd coin on the flip will determine the winner
     (3) If four schools are tied, each pair of teams will flip a coin with the two winners flipping a second time

     The rankings (ratings) shall be used to determine the first round host district in any sub region or region contest involving member school teams under the jurisdiction of different district committees, unless otherwise provided for an agreement of the involved district committees.

     Subsequent round contests involving member school teams under the jurisdiction of different district committees shall be played at a site approved by the Executive Director or his designee, unless otherwise provided for by an agreement of the involved district committees.
