DISTRICT 11 NOTES – Week 4

Tagged under: District 11

| October 2, 2015

RUNNINGBACKS:  Harry Hall of Northwestern rushed for 195 yards and 4 td’s in their win over Wilson.  Hall went over 4,000 yards for his career (4,045) and has scored 45 td’s.  Other players in the District that scored 45 td’s in their careers, were Matt Thomas (Parkland), CJ Billera (Emmaus), Chris Smith (Southern Lehigh), Eric Whalen (Shenandoah Valley) and Ra’Von Burton of Catasauqua.  Hall’s 4,045 yards places him in 29th all-time in the District just ahead of Jim “Ziggy” Dudash of Mahanoy Area and Darren Mason of Liberty.  Lenny Dulsky of Mahanoy Area rushed for 329 yards and 4 td’s in their win over Minersville.  The 329 yards ties the school record held by Mike Gaval.  Gaval set the record in 2011 vs Northwest Area high school.  Evan Culver of Saucon Valley rushed for 185 yards and 4 td’s in their win over Catasauqua.  Culver has 41 career td’s and is now just two td’s behind school record holder Nick Savant.  Savant just set the record two years ago.  Robert Heller of Jim Thorpe rushed for 246 yards and 3 td’s in their win over Tri-Valley.  The school record at Jim Thorpe is 273 yards, set back in 1969 by Pete Susko vs Hamburg.  Susko piled up his yardage on only 18 carries with 5 of them reaching the endzone.  His 5 td’s are a school record which was later matched by Craig Zurn in 2006.  Susko also had three 2 point conversions for a school record 36 points.  The Olympians won the game 60-0 and rolled up 455 yards rushing.  The 1969 season was Hamburg’s first year of Varsity football.  Jamaal Brome of Stroudsburg leads the District with 827 yards and 13 td’s.  Antwon Keenan of Bethlehem Catholic also has 13 td’s.  Austyn Borre of Pleasant Valley rushed for over 100 yards and caught 2 passes for over 100 yards vs Allen.  Borre also scored 4 td’s and now has 53 for his career.  That ties him with Sean Bleiler of Parkland and Ahkeem Smith of Liberty for 38th place all-time in the District.  Wyatt Clements of Lehighton scored 3 td’s in their win over PM East and now has 50 career td’s.  That ties him with Ryan Hluschak of Northern Lehigh for 45th place. Thomas Melchiorre of ES North rushed for 276 yards and 4 td’s (2nd week in a row) vs PM East.  Melchiorre now has 652 yards rushing and 11 td’s this year.  Kyle Boney of Emmaus rushed for 218 yards and 5 td’s in their loss to Nazareth.
QUARTERBACKS:  Tre Jordan of Notre Dame threw for a 218 yards with 2 td passes and also rushed for 108 yards and 2 more scores.  Jordan is one of three District 11 quarterbacks that have thrown for over 1,000 yards this season.  Jordan leads with 1,043 yards, followed closely by Southern Lehigh’s Blake Levengood, who has thrown for 1,041 yards.  Travis Stefanick of Nazareth is just behind them with 1,019 yards.  Levengood threw for 297 yards and 3 td’s last week.  Stefanik rushed for 177 yards and scored 2 td’s and also threw for 226 yards and 5 td passes.  The 5 td passes ties Dan Harding’s school record.  Harding threw 5 td’s vs Central Catholic in 2010 his junior year.  Tevon Weber of Salisbury and Stefanik are tied for the District lead with 12 td passes each.  Bobby Grigas of North Schuylkill threw for 150 yards and 3 td’s in their win over Marian Catholic.  Grigas set the career passing yardage record at the school.  Former Penn State player, Terry Rakowsky held the old record when he threw for 3,755 yards from 1975-77.  Grigas now has 3,839 yards.  Jake Jakobson of Stroudsburg threw for 274 yards and 4 td’s in their win over Dieruff. Jakobson went over 2,000 yards in his career (2,027) and tied the school record for career td passes with 28.  Pat Rinard threw 28 td passes from 1984-86.  Devante Cross of Parkland joins the “4,000 yard” club and now has 4,024 career passing yards
Looking at the career passing charts for District 11: Tre Jordan is now in 14th place (5,552), sandwiched between Phil Stambaugh of Pius X and Dan Harding of Nazareth.  Doug Erney of Liberty is in 18th place (5,318).  Julian Spigner of Bethlehem Catholic moves up to 34th place (4,427) and is now 67 yards behind Nathan Hood (Pen Argyl) and 50 yards ahead of Matt Long (Jim Thorpe).  Devante Cross of Parkland is in 41st (4,024), splitting Jim McNeal of Williams Valley and Mike Gnall of Whitehall.  Bobby Grigas of North Schuylkill breaks into the top 50 and sits in 46th place.  For career td passes, Jordan is still in 8th place all-time with 63.  Corey Cinicola of Jim Thorpe is in 7th with 64.  Erney moves ahead of Spigner by one, 53 to 52 which places him in a 16th place tie with Tim Cramsey of Central Catholic and Tony Gomez of Pottsville.  Grigas, who threw 3 td passes last week moves him up to 27th place.  Cazzie Kosciolek (Panther Valley), Brandon Leap (Pleasant Valley) and Ryan Fry of Nazareth also have 47 career td passes. Cross now has 45 td passes and is in a tie for 32nd place with Jason Hughes of Bangor and Steven Sedesse of Williams Valley.
RECEIVERS:  District leader Julian Liaci of Nazareth caught 3 passes last week vs Emmaus with 2 of them going for td’s.  Liaci now has 29 catches, with 6 of them going for td’s.  Nate Stewart of Bethlehem Catholic now has 140 career catches for 2,389 yards.  The 140 catches is good enough for 6th place all-time in the District.  The 2,389 yards is also 6th place all-time on the list.  Stewart knocks Jeff McGeehin of Central Catholic down to 7th place.  McGeehin had 2,377 yards from 1971-73.  Ethan Price of Southern Lehigh had another huge game last week.  Price caught 5 passes for 133 yards and 2 td’s vs Pen Argyl.  Price leads the District with 635 receiving yards and 7 td catches.  Teammate, Tim Walter caught 6 passes for 123 yards and a td.  Tevon Murray (NS), Jahan Dotson (Naz), Mike Kane (SV) and Mason Donaldson of Salisbury are all closing in on their school record for td catches in a career.  Murray might already have it,  but I don’t have an official number yet for current leader Al Marquardt.
Welcome 5 new players to the chart:  Thomas Melchiorre of ES North, Lenny Dulsky of Mahanoy Area, Cristian Burker of Catty, Blake Levengood of S. Lehigh and Rich Zahodnick of N. Schuylkill.
Week 4 Trivia:  Tevon Murray, a 6’6″ wide receiver from North Schuylkill didn’t catch one of Bobby Grigas’ 3 td passes last week vs Marian Catholic.  That snapped a streak of 11 consecutive games with a td catch.  The District 11 record is 14 consecutive games.  Who holds the record?
Week 3 Trivia:  Jahan Dotson of Nazareth broke the District 11 record for most catches for a player in their freshman and sophomore seasons.  Dotson has 75 catches so far in his career.  Who held the old record with 72 catches?  Matt Camilletti of Pius X (2008-09).
Week 2 Trivia: Name the only pair of brothers from District 11 to each rush for over 1,000 yards in the same season.  Joe and Jim Agosti of Marian Catholic did the trick in 1976.  Senior Joe, rushed for 1,050 yards and 8 td’s, while brother Jim, a junior rushed for 1,274 yards and 23 td’s (both school records at the time).  Jim would go over 1,200 yards again as a senior in 1977.  Jim totaled 142 points in 1976 to break the old Carbon County scoring record that was held since 1956.  Eddie Kocha of Nesquehoning (also a junior) scored 141 points in 9 games.  The year before in 1975, Marian also had 2 players rush for 1,000 yards each.  Pete Albano rushed for 1,268 yards and Fred Segilia rushed for 1,038 yards.  The head coach for the 1975 and 1976 seasons was Chuck Rocconi.  The following year, Stan Dakosky took over the team and is now in his 38th year.
Week 1 Trivia: Ethan Price of Southern Lehigh also broke the District 11 single game receiving yardage record with his 296 yards.  Who held the old District record? Kevin Gulyas (2011 vs Parkland) of Central Catholic and Quintin Lopez (2004 vs Southern Columbia) of Pius X both had 280 yards in a game.
