Coach George Curry passes away

Berwick’s George Curry, Pennsylvania’s all-time leader in career high school football coaching victories, has died.

He was 71.

Curry’s death Friday morning comes just months after he retired from a 46-year career as head coach, giving up his most treasured job, leading the Berwick Bulldogs. In his final season on the Berwick sideline, Curry struggled with various health issues, many of which were related to the onset of ALS.

Former Wilkes University head coach Frank Sheptock was appointed head football coach by the Berwick School Board in December.

Curry won 455 games in a high school career career that started at Lake-Lehman and included a stop at Wyoming Valley West before he returned to Berwick in 2012.

During Curry’s first run as Berwick coach, the Bulldogs won state championships on the field and national championships in mythical rankings. He led Berwick to a then-record six Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state championships in Class AAA.

Despite learning during the 2015 season that he had ALS, the neurodegenerative disease also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, Curry led the Bulldogs back to the District 2 Class AAA championship game. His final game was a district championship loss to Scranton Prep at Scranton Memorial Stadium.

Although done with coaching, Curry had hoped to continue teaching the sport, including at the annual quarterbacks camp.
