YOUR 2021 PIAA CLASS 1A CHAMPIONS: THE BISHOP GUILFOYLE MARAUDERS

It wasn’t easy, but the Marauders of Bishop Guilfoyle used a brutal defense and just just enough points to win their 4th state title over a tough Redbank Valley team 21-14. Karson Kiesewetter connected with Cooper Rother with 3:21 left in the game for the win. “This is our fourth championship and this game was a battle. This was two even teams that were just throwing haymakers. We hit one, they hit one, it was just a great football game. Hats off to Redbank Valley too. They fought right till the end” said BG head coach Justin Wheeler.

A battle it was. And it was a tale of two halves.  BG outgained the Bulldogs 176 – 32 in the first half but held a slim 7-0 lead going into the break. Redbank’s defense bent, but only broke once.

The Marauders had a chance to score early but missed on a 37 yard field goal attempt early in the game on their first drive. Then, with 26 seconds left in the first quarter, BG struck paydirt on a one yard run by Kiesenwetter. The play was highlighted by a 21 yard run by Kiesenwetter and a 16 yard pass to the one to Collin Campbell.

The second half was a different story altogether. Redbanks defense forced a fumble and recovered the ball. Several plays later Marquese Gardlock hauled in a 38 yd pass from Bryson Bain to tie the game at 7.

It took just three plays for BG to regain the lead, with a play that didn’t work for them against Farrell a couple years ago. With the ball at their 43, Kiesenwetter took his team to the line. “They just kept creeping up and creeping up” said Kiesenwetter. Redbank’s defense crept up a bit too close and Anthony Ciofarri snuck past the entire defense. It was an east jump pass for Kiesenwetter and 57 yards later Ciofarri was in the endzone.

“Yeah, we looked at that play all week long” said Wheeler. “We saw them coming closer and thought that was a good time to put that in there.”

The Bulldogs fought back, scoring on a trick play from 38 yards out. A halfback pitch to Bain and then Bain hit a wide open Gardlock to tie the game at 14 with 4:38 left to play.

It didn’t take long for BG to take the lead back, and get the winning score. Kiesenwetter hit Cooper Rother for a big 43 yard pass to the Redbank 20. Rother ran for 6 then ran in the game winner. “The fans loved it, I loved it. This was a great game by both teams” said a jubilant Rother. “That touchdown, it felt great!”
