Last night I made a much needed trip to Princeton High School in Cincinnati to watch the Southwest Ohio Football Coaches Association All-Star game. Chad Murphy was the head coach for the West team, with Nick Osborne heading up the East team. The game’s first big play came from Marquee Cummimgs of Cincinnati St. Xavier, when he got to Luca Aquilno of Loveland for a nine-yard loss.

When the West offense got on the field, Cameron Goode, who played his ball at Lakota West, picked up a nice 30 yards, letting the nice sized crowd know that the rushing game was going to be a main theme. Staying on the ground, Can Cope of LaSalle used some fine work from his offensive line to score from two yards out. The West’s kicker, David Maurer (Elder), converted a point-after-kick to put the West up 7-0 with the first quarter clock reading 6:01. The last 3:47 of the quarter belonged to the West defense led by Namily Cummings, who had two more sacks to give him three in the opening quarter. The stud defensive end was in the back field almost as much as any of the runners on the East squad in the first quarter.

In quarter number two, the West ended a three-play, twenty-seven yard drive with a twelve yard run from Ke’Yandre Larry (Taft). With another successful Maurer point after kick, we had a 14-0 score with 9:27 left. The East All-Stars would need just four plays to go seventy-five yards to make this a 14-7 game. Aquilno connected with Lucas Swierk (Little Miami), who also nailed the point after kick.

Josh Manz (Batavia) would keep the momentum with the East All-Stars when he sacked Cope for a loss of eight. Later in the quarter, Goode would go up the middle against the East defense for a big thirty-nine yard run. The drive would end a short time later, then it was time for the East team to lock things up with Zane Duning (Lebanon) hauling in a seventy-four yard touchdown pass catch.

Only tweleve seconds later, Keyshawn Barber (Hughes) would show that he was as good, if not the best receiver on the field, when he hauled in a nicely thrown pass and took it to the house from seventy-five yards out. After the point after kick, the West had retaken the lead, 21-14. The West All-stars defense would make the final big play of the half when Terrance Malone (Clark Montssori) recorded another West sack.

The third quarter was a defensive slug fest with Cummings being the headline act with another sack at the 7:30 mark. From there, the West offense would seize control of the game, ending a thirty-six yard drive that needed just two plays, with Jacob Harrison scoring on a seventy-four yard touchdown pass. With the successful point after kick, we had a 28-14 game, with 6:16 left on the clock.

The final 5:53 seconds of the quarter would see Ibrahim Sidibe (Western Hills) pick up a sack for the West, then the East pick up a sack from Josh Manz (Batavia). The biggest blow came from the west team, as Barber once again demonstrated his talent with a 51-yard touchdown catch to make the score 35-14.

The final frame would see both teams make some big plays, but neither was able to score. Syncere Dubose (North College Hill) would get a pick as the West defense continued to own the game. Jacob Harrison (Shroder Padeia) would pick up twenty-one yards to give the West team another first down. Manz would get a six-yard loss from the extremely talented Tyrek Spikes (Winton Woods). The East defense also got an interception from Ashton Wolfe (Bethel-Tate). The final big play would come from the dominating West defense when Max Wilking (Wyoming) got the game’s final sack.
