Last night I made my 2nd trip of the season to Bainbridge to watch the Paint Valley Bearcats play host the Piketon Redstreaks. This would be my first time ever seeing Piketon play and complete the list of seeing all the teams in the conference.
Talk on Southeasternohiopreps.com was this game was to be a double-digit game, easily won by Piketon. Message boards are for fans to spout off behind A keyboard and means nothing in the real world. Most understand players and coaches read these boards, not all but enough to know, that these posts are wide spread and reach some players as well as coaches. As I watched these teams warm-up, I had the rare thought that this game was not going to be close and the outcome was going to shock some. By the time this was over, we had 892 unofficial yards and 75 points and my thoughts were proven correct. Before I get to the action I am using the rosters from svcsportszone.com
The defense was on stage first, with Kydan Potts stopping the Bearcats Tramel Byrd, for a one-yard loss just 1:30 seconds into the game. From there Cavan Cooper connected with Beau Blankenship, for a gain of about 20 yards. The 4 play, 55-yard drive ended when Cooper read his blocks just right to avoid any would-be tacklers to score from 31 yards out to make this a 6-0 score. Line play for the Bearcats, on both sides of the ball would turn out to be one of the biggest differences in this game. I.M.O.
The Redstreaks offense flashed like lighting when Levi Gullion found Logan Maynard for a 41-yard touchdown, the P.A.T. off of the foot of Brandt Thompson made this a 7-6 game. The drive lasted for 6 plays and totaled 73 yards. Gullion throws a pretty pass and seems to see the field very well.
The Bearcats found themselves facing a fourth and twenty-one and they went for it because they were in that no man’s land, where it was too far for a field goal and too short to punt. Copper had Cole Miller wide opened, but the young QB overthrew the ball resulting in a turnover on downs. Cooper seemed unfazed by the bad throw and his play by the time all was said and done would show this and do so by doing many things as a true leader does. Gullion would face ED TOO TALL JONES like pressure from, Byrd causing the QB to be called for intentional grounding. Byrd was another Bearcat that would go on to have a monster type game. Gullion would find Camren Loar, who made some sweet moves after the catch to pick up 45 yards. Miller would pick off a pass to stop the drive on one of many big plays he would make on this night.
The Redstreaks defense made the next two big plays, first, it was Brody Fuller knocked a pass away meant for Cooper. The bad snap forced Cooper to scramble and then throw an ill-advised pass that was picked off by Logan Maynard. I.M.O. this seems to wake young Cooper up and as the old saying goes, the light seems to come on after the pick and the game almost seems to slow down for the Sophomore. After getting the ball back Piketon would get an 18-yard reception from Maynard, who broke a tackle on his way to the big gain. Gullion would get sacked by Byrd, Caden Smith, and Devlen Spradlin for a 5-yard loss. The Bearcats defense then held Gullion on a fourth and one try to give the ball back to the offense. The offense needed just one play to go the 89 yards needed for the score, with Cooper using his feet to do so. the 6-1, 180-pound quarterback looked like former Athens QB Joey Burrow and he left the defense in his dust. Cordell Grubb blasted in to convert the two-point run, making this A 14-7 game, with 8:31 left in the half.
Brody Fuller hauled in a Gullion pass picking up 32 yards in the process. Bryd recorded a sack of Gullion right after the big pass play, resulting in a 5-yard loss. The Bearcats defense forced a punt a short time later and the offense came out like Billy The Kid, with guns a-blazing. Grubb powered his way to the Redstreaks 2 yard line up, setting up a 2 yard Byrd run for six. Byrd broke a tackle easily to get to pay dirt. Dax Estep made it a 21-7 game with his P.A.T.
The Bearcats defense used a high snap to Gullion to get another sack on the QB, with Spradlin doing the honors. After getting the ball back Cooper tossed a 48-yard touchdown to Miller. The P.A.T. made this a 28-7 game. Cooper to Miller will be a combo that is going to electrify ti Bearcats crowd a lot for the rest of this season and then the two that follow. Gullion would total 19 yards on two carries to make this a 28-13 game, with 1:30 left in the half. Though the Bearcats got the last laugh before the half ended with Caden Smith and Nick Mills sacking Gullion, for another loss of 7 yards.
A 29 yard run by Gullion set up his own 39-yard gut run for a touchdown, with 11:06 left in the third. A nice stiff arm aided in a big way on the score. A two-point try failed leaving this a 28-19 game.
The Bearcats dominated the rest of this one. A 68-yard sprint by Byrd resulted in a touchdown. He easily outran what appeared to be a tired defense. The P.A.T. would make this 35-19 game, with 10:21 left in the third quarter. Piketon would still have so moments in this one and with 9:22 left in the quarter Gullion created one of them by completing a 46-yard pass to a wide opened
Camren Loar. Gullion trying to make something happen at the 8:43 mark pitched the ball late on an option play, with the ball hitting the ground and Byrd pouncing on it, for the Bearcats. Bryd then powered his way to 18 yards on another John Riggins like run. From there Grubb picked up 18 yards and then he scored from 2 yards out. The P.A.T. by Estep made this a 42-19 game, with 5:28 left.
After stopping Gullion on a fourth and one try, the Bearcats offense would go 29 yards on seven plays to score again. The scoring play happened on fourth and long, with Cooper finding Trent Mettler from 19 yards out. The P.A.T. made this a 49-19 game.
The Bearcats unleashed a massive explosion with their offensive showing in this one. There was no way a team watching the film on this one, will be able to key on just one of two players if they hope to stop the Bearcat train.
Kaden Henderson picked up A sack on Gullion to end the third quarter. Piketon was beaten badly at this point as the score indicates, but those young men never seemed to quit and that shows something special on its own.
The fourth quarter was played under the running clock allowing it to fly by but not before Freshman Dom Chambers gave future defense something else to worry about, with his 42-yard touchdown run. Another P.A.T. kick from Estep gave us a final score and would make this a 56-19 final
