My 2020 high school football season kicked off with a trip to Fountain City, Indiana to watch the hometown team Northeastern Knights battle the Union County Patriots. The Knights had won the last three games in this series. In watching the teams warm-up I was intrigued by the energy both teams displayed as well as the Patriots fans, as I set on the away side so that I could be top road fifty-yard line.

Clay Grey of the Knights came up with the games first big play, when he got to Zach Hill for a two-yard loss, with just 4:46 gone in the game. That would be the end for the Knights defense, as it seemed that play awakens the triple-headed beast known as Hill, Blake Richards, and the leader big bad, Mason Wicker. Hill would connect with Richards for a third and ten, for a twenty-one yard gain, at the 9:11 mark of the quarter. Then Wicker capped off the scoring drive, with a six-yard touchdown run. After Gabe Cox booted the P.A.T. the Patriots had a 7-0 lead, with 7:48 left in the quarter.
Wicker would show he can be a force on defense too when he stopped Alex Mikesell for a five-yard loss. Then Alex Moore, who had one heck of a game on defense for the Patriots stopped Clay Grey, for a four-yard loss. Carson Terrell was sacked for an eight-yard loss and I believe the PA announcer called Moore’s name for the sack. On fourth and long Garrett Tudor looked to run on a fake punt, but he slipped before he got started, with the result being a turnover on downs.
Union County needed just one play to go the thirty-six yard needed for another score and that came on another catch by Richards. The point-after kick was low and blocked keeping this a 13-0 game, with 4:39 left in the quarter. After quickly depositing the Knights offense, the Patriots offense went right back to work. Wicker threw a halfback pass to Ragen Bias good for nineteen yards. The eight-play, sixty seven-yard drive concluded with a seventeen-yard touchdown pass to Jaden Bias. The P.A.T. by Cox increased the lead to 20-0.
The quarter came to a close with Moore stopping Mikesell, for a three-yard loss. At this point in the game, Zach Hill was looking like Tom Brady and Moore was acting like young Tony Siragusa. The defensive line overall for Union County was owning things in a huge way and that made life miserable for anyone who touched the ball for the Knights.

The Knights looked to have some life after a seventy-two yard run by Mikesell, who I think is going to have a big season, when all is said and done. unfortunately for the Knights offense, they put the ball on the ground, after the long run, and making the recovery for the Patriots was, #78 Marek Whitsell on his own five-yard line. From there Wicker would do his best John Riggins impression, with a rumbling, stumbling, zig-zagging ninety five-yard touchdown run, making this a 26-0 game, with 10:15 left in the half.
The Knights would finally put together a nice six-play, fifty-nine-yard drive, that came to an end on a thirty-four yard run by #10 Ashton Martin, after the P.A.T. from Calvin Berhalter we had a 26-7 game, with 8:10 left in the half. The Patriots would respond at the 5:54 mark when Richards scored from eighteen yards out, then Cox connected on his P.A.T. to make the score 33-7. Jaden Bias would pick off a Terrell pass to give the road team the ball back. From there Hill found Jaden Bias on a pass to take the ball to the one-yard line. Wicker made like Riggins again and plowed in from a yard out. The P.A.T. made this a 40-7 contest.

The third quarter was flying by at a fast pace when Reece Watterson of the Patriots pounced on a Knights fumble on his own twenty-eight-yard line. Then Hill hit Derek Grissom for a thirty two-yard gain. Wicker would take it the final forty-five yards for another touchdown to make this a 46-7 game. It was reported that the beast totaled 330 yards on the night, a school record. The Knights would turn the ball over on downs after Noah Taylor stopped Tudor on another fake punt attempt. Hill would find Jaden Bias for the Patriots final touchdown that totaled fifteen yards. The P.A.T. by Cox made this a 53-7 game. With 52.1 left in the third quarter, the Knights got one final score, when Trace Farris crossed the goal line from thirteen yards out. Terrell found Josh Johnston for the two-point conversion to make the final score 53-15.
