The second half was hot. For Penns Valley.

Momentum is a powerful thing. When you have it, you feel unstoppable. Everything goes right. When you want it, you can’t panic. You have to just play your game and trust your teammates. When you had it and lost it, it’s tough to get back. And when you wanted it and got it, the world just seems to roll with you. Penns Valley ripped the momentum away from Tyrone and scored 21 unanswered points to get the 28-21 homecoming win, only thier third in history versus Tyrone.

Tyrone opened their offensive game and scored quickly, going on a four play, 57 yard drive capped by a 14 yard pass from Ashton Walk to Andrew Weaver to jump out to a 7-0 lead. The drive was jump started by a 40 yard run from Kolten Miller to the Rams 11.

The Rams struck back driving 62 yards and finished the drive with a 9 yard run by Romig to tie the score at 7 with 5:16 left in the first quarter. From there it was mostly Tyrone’s game. The visiting team struck back with a 71 yard, 11 play drive aided by 2 Penns Valley penalties. Walk and Weaver hooked up again from 2 yards out and the Eagles took command of the first half.

A quick three and out gave the Golden Eagles the ball at their 29. Walk went on a streak and completed 5 passes, along with steady running from Kolten Miller & Walk, Eventually the signal caller carried the ball in from the one to put Tyrone up 21-7 just before the break. Going into the second half it seemed like Tyrone had all the momentum to go with their 21-7 lead.  After Penns Valley recovered the opening kick and drove to the Tyrone 2 yard line. Dravyn Crowell intercepted a pass from Jackson Romig to end that drive.

It didn’t happen right away, but something happened that created a huge momentum swing. Late in the third quarter, after both teams exchanged the ball several times without threatening to score, the Rams defense made a big stop on third down to force a punt that gave them the ball on the Tyrone 43. Jackson Romig launched a pass to John Meyer at the 16 then he hit Colin Niewiniski from 16 yards out to make it a 21-14 deficit at the start of the 4th quarter.

Rams head coach Marty Tobias never panicked. “At halttime we told the kids we’re making the plays, we’re just not making enough plays. We need to be more aggressive. We knew that we had to apply pressure to their quarterback because he had enough time in the first half.”

You could feel it. The crowd was screaming. The Rams sideline was buzzing. The momentum was drifting from one side of the field to the other. On the ensuing kick, the Tyrone player bobbled the ball at the two and as he grabbed it he was dropped at the two yard line. PV nearly got a safety on th enext play but the defense did their job and forced another punt that only made it to the 31 yard line. Romig hit Ty Watson over the middle for a quick 25 yard gain to the 6, then he found Danin Kerstetter for the tying score. “We never quit. That is how you win” said Jackson Romig.

The momentum swing was complete. Penns Valley’s defense swarmed the Tyrone backfield, Caleb Confer intercepted a Walk pass. They got to the Tyrone 8 and attempted a field goal that was blocked. When Tyrone took over, we saw the mirror image of what happened to Penns Valley early in the third. Walk hit Weaver for a 40 yard gain to get Tyrone closer to the win, but that Rams defense was relentless and with not much time remaining forced a punt that put them at their own 25 with just minutes left in the game. Romig never panicked. A 13 yard pass to Meyer, 5 yards to Watson, mix in a couple short runs, then a big time, fourth and three, under pressure toss to Miles Brooks who blasted up the middle for the game winning 34 yard score with 54 seconds left in the game. Brooks would then get the game clinching interception. ”

“This is a huge win for the kids” said Tobias. “This was a fun game”.  By beating Tyrone the Rams handed the very last mountain league title to the Clearfield Bison, their 12th such title.
