LEHIGHTON- Under the bright lights of Lehighton Multi-Purpose Stadium, Lonnie Rice put on a show with both his arm and legs and led the Lancers of Bishop McDevitt to a 28-13 victory over the Dunmore Bucks 28-13 in a PIAA State 2A playoff contest on a chilly night in Carbon County.
Rice, accounted for all four scores in the game, two rushing and two via the airwaves after his squad got off to a shaky start to begin the game. The Lancers took the opening kickoff, but a fumble on the return set the Bucks up near midfield. They were unable to take advantage and were forced to punt. Dunmore’s defense stymied the Lancers offense, forcing a punt, but McDevitt caught a break as the returner coughed up the ball at the 43 as there was also a roughing the kicker penalty on the Bucks.

On the ensuing drive, Rice connected with Corey Wright-Downing on a 44 yard score, the PAT was blocked making the score 6-0 at the 6:47 mark of the opening quarter.

Dunmore moved the ball into McDevitt Territory, but a 39 yard field goal attempt by Peyton Badryka hit the left upright and the Bucks were denied points. After stopping the Lancers short of the line to gain on a fourth down pass completion, Dunmore fumbled the ball right back on the first play which led to Rice hitting Ty Tindal for a 22 yard score and a 12-0 lead as the PAT was blocked with 8:39 before halftime.

Christian Buckley, Dunmore’s running back, got his team on the board with a 36 yard score to make it 12-6 at the 5:19 mark. Badryka came up short on another 39 yard field goal after a Buckley interception of a Rice pass with 19 ticks left till intermission.

“The line did a great job on that run. I saw the opening and just hit and outran their safety” Buckley stated.

The third quarter began with a 14 play 67 yard drive for the District 2 champions capped off with a ten yard run by Rayshaun Dawkins giving Dunmore their only lead of 13-12 that ate up 7:16 off the clock.

It only took Rice and the offense five plays to answer back from 4 yards out with 3:02 left. Akire Lillie converted to two-point play giving the Lancers a 20-13 lead. That capped a 67 yard drive.

A fourth quarter drive by Dunmore stalled after penetrating inside the five yard line. Two illegal procedure penalties and a three yard loss of yardage play, left the Bucks with a fourth-and-goal from the 13 the pass attempted in the end fell incomplete.

McDevitt proceded with an 87 yard drive culminating in a Rice score from 25 yards out on a fourth and one with just over five minutes left in the game.

“It was a great win for us against a very well coached team. They kept coming at us for 48 minutes. They have some great players and a terrific system.” It was a terrific game by both teams.” McDevitt coach Mike Watkins stated.

Bishop McDevitt (7-6) advances to face Richland Twp next week at a site and time TBA. Richland defeated Ligonier Valley 34-6. Dunmore ends its season at 8-5.
