Allentown- The Triple-Threat combination of Run-FHS: Cam Fisher, Hunter Hughes and Asher Smith paved the way for Southern Lehigh’s historic night as the Spartans gashed the East Stroudsburg South defense en route to a 52-35 decision on a frozen Friday night at J. Birney Crum Stadium, for the schools’ first District XI 5A championship.

Behind an experienced offensive line Smith set a school record for rushing yards with 323 on 19 touches, breaking his own record of 313 yards a mere two weeks prior. Smith also scored four touchdowns. Hughes gained 101 yards on 10 carries and two scores, while Fisher picked up 89 yards on 11 carries and one score as the Spartans’ Delaware Wing-T kept the Cavalier defense on their heels all night in accumulating 513 total yards in the win.

Both teams combined for 35 points in the first quarter alone, as Southern Lehigh got out of the gate with a 21-14 lead. Smith dashed in from 61 and 64 yards, Fisher scored from 70 yards, sandwiched in between were two scores by East Stroudsburg South: Christian Arrington ripped off a 52 yard jaunt and Christian Sapp found the end zone from 37 yards out.

A 91 yard sprint by Smith and a 30 yard field goal by Christian Colasurdo pushed the lead to 31-14 at intermission.

East Stroudsburg South could not get any closer than ten points after the break. William Fish hooked up with Nyeer Ford Cherry for a 14 yard score, but again the Spartans answered with a 16 yard run by Hughes with 6:09 left in the third quarter to make it 38-21. Arrington pushed his way in from four yards out to get it to 38-28 heading into final twelve minutes.

In the fourth quarter, Hughes found pay-dirt from six yards out to make it 45-28 with 7:51 left. Sapp would answer with a one yard dive, but Smith would put the game away with a 52 yard run giving his team the championship.

We’ve got a district title along with three Colonial League championships. Give East Stroudsburg South credit they just kept battling us. But our offense stepped up to the challenge.” Southern Lehigh coach John Toman stated.

Southern Lehigh (11-1) advance to play District 10 champion and undefeated Oil City, a 9-7 winner over Holidaysburg 9-7 Friday night at a time and date TBA.
