CENTER VALLEY- Halloween was on Thursday, but the three-headed monster on the Southern Lehigh Spartans football team made their presence known on Friday night and it was no treat for Wyoming Valley West.

The Spartans, from District 2 made their way down the Pennsylvania turnpike only to be greeted by a ferocious group of running backs: Asher Smith, Can Fisher and Hunter Hughes dashed and gashed their way to 272 yards and five touchdowns in a 42-7 route in a PIAA District 2/11 5A subregional contest before a large crowd on a cold night.

Valley West took the opening kickoff and attempted to put the game in the hands of quarterback Dontae Rhodes, who missed most of the season because of an injury, Rhodes picked up a couple of first downs using his elusiveness and agility. A huge sack by the Spartans defense forced WVW punting into a stiff breeze setting up Southern Lehigh just 36 yards from the end zone. Smith scored from 26 yards out to open the scoring with 4:52 taken off the clock. Smith also added a 2 yard score out of the wildcat formation on a fourth down play with 2:41 left in the quarter, which set the school record for touchdowns in a season at 36.

Fisher, who rushed for game-high 123 yards, the ripped off a 72 yard jaunt for a score three minutes into the second quarter to make the score 21-0. Breaking a tackle near the 20 along the way.

Valley West, then had their best drive of the night, again behind Rhodes, they moved the ball to the Spartan 2. Brendan Woods bulled his way for a score making it 21-7 as it went to intermission, not before a targeting call on Valley West’s Darius Redguard at the end of the half on Logan Shorb, who was in pursuit of Rhodes on the play. Redguard was disqualified from the contest, but did high-five a few of his teammates as he headed for the sidelines.

Southern Lehigh came out in the second half even more focused and motivated as they scored on three straight drives. Michael Boodnar was on the receiving end of a Noah Vogeler 31 yard pass at the 8:59 mark of the third quarter. Hughes joined Fisher and Smith putting points on the board with a 9 and 8 yard runs to make it 42-7 to start the final quarter.

“We were corned coming into the game about their (Wyoming Valley West’s) size. Our blocking schemes are pretty basic, so they know how to adapt to what the defenses put in front of them, Southern lehigh coach John Toman stated.

Southern Lehigh (10-1) will advance to District XI title game next week at a site and time to be determined against East Stroudsburg South (9-2), who defeated Pocono Mountain East 49-19 Friday night.
