BETHLEHEM- The character of a team can be defined in how they respond after facing adversity. Friday night, at Bethlehem Area School District Stadium they put that loss in the rear-view mirror and rallied from an early deficit to knock off rival Bethlehem Catholic 31-24 in a key EPC South contest.

Behind quarterback Matt Rauscher and running back and Jayden Williams both rushing for over a hundred yards apiece the Vikings head into the district playoffs next week on a positive note.

Rauscher picked up 148 yards on the ground, while throwing for a 111 on 12 completions on 14 attempts while accounting for three scores, one rushing and two passing. Williams, gashed the Golden Hawks defense for 139 yards on 31 carries and one score in the victory.

Jeremy Rivera was on the receiving end of a five yard pass from Rauscher with 9:42 before halftime.

A twelve play 93 yard drive by Central catholic ate up nearly six minutes of game time was capped off by a 10 yard run by Williams to give the Vikings a 14-7 lead. The drive was aided by a couple of personal foul calls on the Hawks.

The Hawks managed to close the gap to 14-10 at the end of the half as a 33 yard field goal by Anthony Barczynski.

A 94 yard drive for the Vikings on their first possession after intermission, highlighted by a 45 yard run by Rauscher, concluded with a juggling catch in the end zone by George Hlavac for an eight yard score extended the lead to 20-10 as the PAT sailed wide.

After a 23 yard field goal by Christopher Matejcek for Central Catholic made the score 23-10, Bethlehem Catholic’s Tavion Banks scored on a ten yard run to make it 23-17 with still 11:40 left in the contest. Rauscher and the Viking offense had an answer on the ensuing drive, with a five yard run, after an excellent fake to Williams on the quarterback keeper with 8:46 on the clock to make the score 31-17 with the two-point conversion.

A spectacular pass-and-catch from Richardson to Eric Wert for Becahi followed the Viking score, as Wert alluded several would be tacklers, then a cut-back move at the Viking ten allowed him to find paydirt to cut the lead to 31-24 with just under eight minutes to play.

Rauscher picked up a first down on a 4th-and-2, inside the Golden Hawk five yard with just over a minute left, allowed his team to atke a knee to close out the game.

Both teams qualify for the District XI playoffs next week against opponents that will be announced at later time.
