Turner Sets Single Game Passing Touchdown Record In Garnet Valley’s Win over Nazareth

GLEN MILLS: When you play Quarterback for a team that’s traditionally a triple-option team like Garnet Valley, you usually don’t get to throw the ball much, so when you do get to, you need to take advantage of it. On Friday night, Sr Colton Turner did just that, completing 8 of his 10 passes for 247 yards and 5 touchdowns, leading his Jaguars to a convincing 63-34 non-league victory over the visiting Nazareth Blue Eagles.

The five-touchdown performance means that Turner stands alone in the Jaguars record book for most passing touchdowns in a single game which was previously held by Jerry Frail (1971 vs Yeadon), Matt McHugh (2005 vs Harriton) Christian Portale (2013 vs Marple Newtown) Matt Mesaros (2022 vs Upper Darby) and Luke O’Donoghue (2024 vs Haverford) all of whom threw 4 touchdowns in a game.

After the game, Turner was quick to give credit to his teammates, saying, “I have the easy job: our offensive line creating a pocket for me, our receivers and tight ends making plays; my job is really easy all credit to those guys.”

One person who was exceptionally happy for Turner was his Head Coach, Eric Van Wyk, who himself was a Jaguars Quarterback. “It means the world. I am just so proud of the young man. He was a junior last year; he worked really hard. By the end of it he continues to grow, and then this year he really worked his tail off to get ready for this moment, and he really showed it tonight.”

After both teams traded three-and-outs on their opening possessions, the Jaguars wasted little time scoring on their second possession when, for the first time all season, Turner stepped back to pass and hit a wide-open Brody Orr in stride for a 65-yard touchdown, putting the Jaguars up 7-0.

On their ensuing drive, the Blue Eagles responded, marching 64 yards on 13 plays that ended with Madson Cooper finding Matt Leluga for a 12-yard touchdown, tying things up at 7 with 3:51 left in the first quarter.

On their ensuing drive the Jaguars went their traditional ground and pound way of doing things following a 46-yard pick up by FB Luke Bernard that put them at the Blue Eagle 7 the Jaguars needed three more plays to take the lead back with Roy Pomarico powering his way in from two-yards out opening a 14-7 lead for the Jags.

The Jaguars’ defense quickly forced the Blue Eagles to a three-and-out, setting the stage for their offense to need only two plays to add to their lead when Turner found Ethan Turner for a 28-yard touchdown, giving the Jags the 21-7 lead after one quarter of play.

The Blue Eagles responded on their ensuing drive after Cooper connected with a receiver for a 50-yard pickup. Will Bacolo powered his way in from 5 yards out, cutting the Jaguars’ lead down to 21-14.

Turner extended the Jaguars’ lead to 28-14 with his third passing touchdown in the first half, this time finding Michael Buono for a 23-yard score. Later in the second quarter, the Jags appeared to be running away with it when Hadrian Krauss bulldozed his way into the end zone from 5 yards out, putting the Jaguars up 35-14 with 1:06 left in the first half.

The Blue Eagles, however, drove down the field and managed to get themselves into field goal position and Owen Hall delivered a  36-yard field goal to cut the Jaguar lead to 35-17 at halftime.

Both teams traded three-and-outs to begin the second half, then on their second possession of the second half the Blue Eagles cut the Jaguars’ lead down to 11 when Bacolo powered his way into the end zone from 2 yards out making it 35-24 with 3:58 left in the third quarter.

On their ensuing drive, Pomarico extended the Jaguars’ lead with a 20-yard touchdown run after 3 quarters of play.

Hall cut into the Jaguars’ lead with 10:37 left to play with his 24-yard field goal that made it 42-27. But on the very next play from scrimmage, Turner went deep and found Vaughn for the second time, this time for an 80-yard touchdown, and the Jaguars opened up a 49-27 lead.

Later in the fourth quarter, Turner put his name in the Jaguar record book, firing his fifth touchdown pass of the game, this time finding Evan McCabe for a 12-yard touchdown, making it 56-27 in favor of the Jaguars. On the ensuing kickoff, Leluga raced 86 yards for the touchdown, making it 56-34.  Sebastian Cantu capped the scoring with a 6-yard touchdown run, making it 63-34 with 4:17 left.

The Jaguars will have a short week this upcoming week, as on Thursday they open Central League when they travel to Haverford. Next Friday, the Blue Eagles will again go on the road when they battle Whitehall. Both games will kick off at 7 pm.
