Archbishop Carroll’s defense put on a show on Friday night enroute to victory

The Archbishop Carroll Patriots picked up their first win over Marple Newtown on Friday night by a final score of 23-7.

 

Here were my thoughts pregame.

The Patriots received the ball first and were forced to punt after a quick three-and-out sequence. The punt from Carroll’s Jack Chisnall was returned to the 40-yard line, and the Tigers set up shop. Marples’ drive would be the same as Carroll’s, a three-and-out with a flag backing them up deep into their own territory. Carroll’s special teams unit was great all night long, and they got things going from the jump. Ray Caswell got through to the punter and blocked Marples’ punt, setting Carroll up in stellar field position on their second offensive drive.

Archbishop Carroll had the ball inside the Marple 10 and wasted no time finding the end zone. After a series of rushing attempts to put the Pats just yards away from the end zone, Tyrone Scriven pushed his way through for a Carroll touchdown. Chisnall’s punt was no good, and Carroll led 6-0 midway through the first quarter.

 

Both teams’ defenses held things down for the next three drives and the remainder of the first quarter, with both Carroll and Marple having to punt the ball away. Following the third punt and the third overall Marple punt, the Patriots’ offense got right back to it.

Carroll incorporated both the run and the pass game in order to drive their way down into Marple territory. Although a few flags interrupted their drive, Carroll still scored with a Jack Chisnall field goal making the score 9-0 with a little over 6 minutes to go in the half.

Neither team had anything going until the last drive of the half, when the Tigers made a switch at Quarterback, pulling Tommy Diblasi for Nick Link. Link was on fire for the entire drive, making stellar passes as he marched the Tigers downfield and put them in a good spot with time dwindling down. With 35 seconds left in the half, Nick Link found Robert Bales for a Marple Newtown touchdown.

The Patriots tried to get a drive rolling with the remaining time on the clock but they were unable to do so.

Here were my thoughts at the halftime break.

Coming out of the break, Carroll kicked it off to Marple Newtown, who punted it right back to the Patriots. Carroll’s freshman QB RJ Finlaw had no problems making plays, which is exactly what he did on Carroll’s drive following the Marple punt. The Patriots ran the ball to kickstart their drive before a deep ball bomb from RJ Finlaw found Tyty Mattison for a big Patriots score. Carroll now led 16-7 with just over 7 minutes left in the third.

Carroll kicked the ball back off to Marple, and their defense continued to shine. Patriots’ newly acquired transfer Tysheen Epps intercepted Marple Newtown’s pass and put Carroll back on offense. Carroll’s offensive drive was short-lived, and they punted the ball right back to the Tigers, who would soon make another mistake. Marple did start to get things rolling on their final drive of the third quarter, but it all came crashing back down when the Tigers threw another interception; this time, it was Carroll’s Trevon Veney on the pick-six for Carroll, making the score 23-7 in favor of the Pats.

Neither team got anything rolling in the fourth and final quarter and the Patriots defense stood strong, giving Archbishop Carroll their first win of the season by a final score of 23-7.
