Oil City Gets Defensive, Shuts Down Meadville, 14-8

Meadville – Oil City limited Meadville to 104 yards of offense and downed the Bulldogs 14-8 Saturday night at Bender Field.
It wasn’t pretty, but the defending District 10 champions put together a couple of touchdown drives, then locked it down on defense to hold off a spirited Meadville comeback attempt.
“We got it done. We tried to give it away, but we got it done,” said Oil City head coach Dan York. “I did not want to come to Meadville and have to play them in the opening game of the season, but that’s exactly what happened. It’s not a league game for us; it’s not a big deal in the standings, but it worked out that way, and I’m happy with the win.”
There was no doubt that 2026 was going to mark a bit of an offensive rebuild for the Oilers. Oil City graduated over 2100 rushing yards and 28 touchdowns with the graduation of quarterback Cole Findlay and tailback Steven Heise; Findlay also passed for 1600 yards and 15 touchdowns, leading the Oilers to a District 10 championship and a berth in the state quarterfinal playoffs.
One of the key pieces Oil City brought back was all-state linebacker, Blake Stevens. Stevens helped lead a linebacking corps that limited that vaunted Meadville rushing attack to only 89 yards and held them out of the end zone; only a fourth-down touchdown grab in the final three minutes broke the attempted shutout.
“A win is a win, and every win is going to be good,” said Stevens. “We got to turn things around; we had lots of chances, and we messed up some. We have great coaches out there, like that safety we took at the end of the game on purpose. The interception at the end of the game is always helpful. I’m happy about it, and it’s a great way to start the season. That Wing T is always going to be a tough offense. Still, we practiced that all week- really, the two weeks. Especially as seniors, we played against them a couple of times. So we knew what was coming. I love defense, and we focused hard on it. I’m defense all the way, so I put in so much time on that.”
Perhaps that, in a game dominated by defense, it was a special teams play that set up the first score. The Oilers got enough pressure on Meadville punter Leo Collins, forcing him to pull the ball down and stopping him well short of a first down, with the Oilers taking over at the Bulldogs’ 20-yard line early in the second quarter.
“100% that gave us momentum,” Stevens said. “A score is a score, and plays like that are the ones that are going to change the game. We were able to get some pressure on their punter, force him to pull the ball down and take over at their 20 and then run it in; that’s our style.”
Two plays later, Tycen Sindlinger scored on a 12-yard run, putting the Oilers up 6-0, a lead they would take into the locker room.
Sindlinger rushed for 41 yards on 10 carries; Carter Thompson ran for a game-high 69 yards on 11 carries for Oil City.
Special teams continued to haunt Meadville in the second half as well, as the Oilers recovered a muffed punt at the Bulldogs’ 19-yard line, where six plays later sophomore quarterback Bryce Marchinke scored on a 4-yard run. He then tossed the two-point conversion pass to Carter Bialo, putting the Oilers ahead 14-0 at the 8:13 mark of the third quarter.
Things got a little more interesting in the 4th quarter, as Meadville finally got its offense going for the first time in the game, driving 64 yards in eight plays. Ben Howe ran 26 yards for the Bulldogs’ longest play of the evening, and on a 4th-and-goal from the 14-yard line, quarterback Harrison Richard found Leo Collins in the back of the end zone, who made an incredible catch between two Oilers, pulling the game to 14-6 with 3:14 to play.
Oil City took an intentional safety with 24 seconds left in the game. Meadville got one final shot with 13 seconds to go after returning the free kick to the Oilers’ 41-yard line; however, Marchinke intercepted Richard’s pass in the closing seconds to seal the victory for the Oilers.
Oil City will now take on their Route 8 rivals in Franklin next Friday night.
“We had to replace a bunch of players from last year. We got a long way to go this season, and much to improve on. I thought our quarterbacks played well. We did drop a touchdown pass. We got things that we can learn from today, but ultimately I’m satisfied with the way the kids played, and we look forward to taking on Franklin next Friday night,” concluded York.
