Richland Holds Off Bishop Guilfoyle in Top-Ranked Showdown

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. — In a battle between two top-ranked teams in Pennsylvania, the Richland Rams came up with a fourth-down interception with 40 seconds remaining to secure a 21-16 victory over Bishop Guilfoyle.
Richland entered Friday night’s matchup ranked No. 4 in Pafootballnews’ Class 2A rankings, while Bishop Guilfoyle came in ranked No. 2 in Class 1A.
The Rams controlled the ball and clock to start the game. Their opening drive lasted 17 plays and was capped by a touchdown pass from Jacob Regan to Arnold Mugerwa. The Marauders ran just five plays before the first quarter came to an end. After several more plays on offense, Carter Boland put Bishop Guilfoyle on the scoreboard with a 33-yard field goal.

Following the kickoff, however, the Rams struck quickly. Regan connected with Jamere Christian on a short pass, and Christian took it 80 yards for a touchdown.
“We said coming in, turnover battle, winning the line of scrimmage, winning big explosive plays. You know, Jamere’s one touchdown, Arnold’s touchdown, those were the difference,” Richland coach Brandon Bailey said.
The Marauders’ offense was centered around quarterback Justin Wheeler, who finished with more than 20 rushing attempts for 121 yards and two touchdowns. Wheeler helped Bishop Guilfoyle cut into the Rams’ lead late in the first half, taking a keeper 7 yards into the end zone to make it 14-10.
“Coach Wheeler’s son played a great game. He was gutty, and our kids just made a few more plays tonight,” Bailey said.
To start the second half, the Marauders were forced to punt. Once again, the Rams put together a lengthy drive, marching 16 plays before Regan capped it with a touchdown run. The score gave Richland a 21-10 lead late in the third quarter.
“I like to say it’s easy, but I know it’s not. I have great teammates that make great plays. I don’t get many rushing touchdowns, so I appreciate that one. But honestly, I have it easy with the guys I’m surrounded with and they let me make plays,” Regan said.
The Marauders needed an answer, and they found one through an explosive play. Que Wheeler, this time lining up as a receiver. Wheeler would be the target of a flea flicker from the back of the playbook. Jack Gioiosa connected with Wheeler, on the flea flicker for a huge gain, setting up the Marauders deep in Richland territory.
A few plays later, Wheeler punched it in from 1 yard out. However, Bishop Guilfoyle failed to convert the ensuing two-point attempt, leaving the score at 21-16 in favor of the Rams.
After back-and-forth drives, the Marauders found themselves in the red zone with time winding down. On fourth down, from the Richland 10-yard line, Marauders quarterback Landon Shellenberger looked for Wheeler in the end zone but instead found Rams defensive back Alex Bond. Bond’s interception sealed the victory for Richland.

The Rams improve to 2-0 and will face Westmont Hilltop in Week 3. Bishop Guilfoyle falls to 1-1 and will look to bounce back next week against Bellefonte.
