Wednesday, September 2

My week began as a guest on The State of PA Football show to recap Week 1 and look ahead to Week 2.  The PA Football News staff is a remarkable crew with 80+ folks dedicated to covering more than 60 games a week across the state.  There’s not another website…perhaps in the entire country…that provides more coverage of high school football in any state!  If you missed the PFN Week 1 STATE of PA Football show click the video below to get caught up!

Thursday, September 3

After taking in five games in Western PA last week, I turned my attention to East/Central PA and District 11 for a three-day, three-game tour beginning in the rolling hills and dense forests of the Pocono Mountains as Lehighton climbed the peaks to visit Pocono Mountain West.  While the two teams were prepared for their non-conference matchup the weather had alternate plans as the contest started on Thursday with a 21-0 Lehighton lead and ended with an Indians victory on Friday by the score of 35-0.

Kudos to both schools’ Athletic Directors and referees, as a powerful storm blew through the area that evening and their swift decision-making allowed fans and players the opportunity to vacate the stadium with plenty of time to head home before returning the following day for completion of the game.

Here’s some highlights from Thursday’s Lehighton vs. Pocono Mountain West game action…

Friday, September 4

Day Two of the District 11 tour took me to North Schuylkill High School, where the Spartans welcomed 3A #4 state-ranked Notre Dame Green Pond for a Friday night tilt.  The visiting Crusaders brought their high-powered offense to the contest and it did not disappoint as their balanced air and ground attack lit up the scoreboard for 35 first half points en route to a 38-7 win.  From the opening kickoff, NDGP was up to the task as they remained undefeated on the young season.

Check out some scoring plays for the NDGP vs. NS matchup…

Saturday, September 5

My final District 11 destination of the weekend featured host 1A state-ranked #9 Williams Valley Vikings taking the field against Pennsylvania’s most successful high school football program in the 15-time State Champion and current 2A #1 state-ranked Southern Columbia Tigers.

For those who have never been to historic Stauffenbert Field in Williamstown the trip is well worth the effort to take in a game “Between The Pines”.  A throwback natural grass gridiron nestled among lofty pine trees, the setting marks the perfect playing field for PA high school football.  Take in the sights at this notable sports landmark…

While many prognosticated a lop-sided affair, the Vikings of Williams Valley stood their ground against the defending State Champ Tigers.  Southern Columbia carried a slim 8-6 advantage into halftime and the tally remained the same late into the 3rd quarter before the Tigers pulled away for a 30-12 victory.

Catch up on the Southern Columbia vs. Williams Valley highlights…
