Whitehall Repeats as Cement Bowl Champions with 31-19 Win over Northampton

After losing their home opener in lopsided fashion 49-13 against Nazareth, Whitehall was not only looking to bounce back, but to do it against a Northampton team riding a 2-0 start that included a come from behind win at home against Delaware Valley 28-24. However, there was a lot more storylines behind this game for both teams. Whitehall honored its football alumni veterans in honor of the heroes of the 9/11 attacks on the 25th anniversary, as well as for the Zephyrs 100th football season as a whole. Once they were honored, the game started with Northampton winning the coin toss and deferring to Whitehall to start the game.

The Zephyrs started from their own 20 and quickly established a ground game with their star senior RB, Jeziah Gregory. However, it would be the legs of senior star Zephyrs QB, Tanner Dogmanits that started the scoring, as his 19 yard TD run put Whitehall up 7-0 with 8:42 left in the 1st.

After the ensuing kickoff, Chase Kessler started Northampton at Whitehall’s 46 after an electric return. On a run heavy drive that featured a lot more of Kessler, as well as Konkrete Kids QB Zion McKinney, the drive ended with a 20 yard Kessler TD run with 5:22 left in the 1st.

 

Whitehall started their next possession at their own 22 and once again committed to a run heavy drive with Gregory and the mobility of Dogmanits, but the drive eventually stalled at the Northampton 18 and forced a FG attempt, which was missed keeping the score 7-7.

Northampton took over from their own 18 and copycatted Whitehall’s previous possession with Kessler and QB McKinney running it down the field, However, the drive ended after Zion McKinney threw an interception on a deep pass attempt on 3rd and 18 from the Whitehall 33, which was intercepted, with the possession starting at the Zephyrs’ own 6.

Both teams would trade punts and the Konkrete Kids got the ball on Whitehall’s 37, but the drive stalled at the Whitehall 17, however the. FG attempt was blocked and the score remained tied at 7 at half.

 

Northampton received the 2nd half Kickoff from their own 23 and went 3 and out. Whitehall then started at their own 20, where they once again powered down the field from the legs of Gregory and Dogmanits, culminating in a 3 yard Tanner Dogmanits TD run with 7:22 left in the 3rd.

 

Northampton received the kickoff and started at their own 20. The drive made it to the Konkrete Kids 49, where Chase Kessler had a catch and fumble, which was upheld by the refs. This gave Whitehall the ball at their own 44. 5 plays later, Tanner Dogmanits’ 26 yard TD run gives the Zephyrs a 21-7 lead with 4:19 left in the 3rd.

 

Northampton started the next possession from their own 36 and a Kessler heavy drive resulted in him scoring. a TD from the goal line. This cut the score to 21-13 Whitehall, as Justin Heckert blocked the XP.

 

Whitehall started the next possession from their own 32 and Dogmanits moved the ball with his arm and legs to drive his team into FG range where the 27 yarder was good and gave Whitehall a 24-13 lead withh 5:56 left in the game.

 

Northampton took over on their own 23 and wasted no time, as they had some quick passes and the drive ended at the 4:43 mark of the 4th quarter when Zion McKinney’s 14 yard TD run brought Northampton within 5 after a failed 2 pt try 24-19.

 

Whitehall started at their own 35 and Tanner Dogmanits got them down he field in 4 plays and hit Henry Shultz for the 24 yard TD to give Whitehall a 31-19 lead with 3:12 left in the game.

 

Northampton started with the ball on their own 32 and the game would essentially end with Iskander Blanco intercepting the ball. A few runs on the next Whitehall possession would bleed the clock and seal the 31-19 win for Whitehall and the Cement Belt Trophy.

 

Northampton falls to 2-1 on the year and takes on Liberty on the road next Friday at 7. Whitehall stays home to take on Pleasant Valley next Friday at 7.
