Thomas Jefferson wins wild one over McKeesport

Every year Thomas Jefferson versus McKeesport is always a classic and this one was no different as Thomas Jefferson defeated McKeesport 40-33 in a game with some wild momentum swings. “As a fan of high school football that was just a great game, two teams were just slugging it back and forth, we came out at the end but it could have been either way” said Coach Cherpak.

Thomas Jefferson got the ball to start the game. The drive didn’t go far and on fourth down they decided to take a gamble but it didn’t pay off and Thomas Jefferson turned the ball over on downs.

Thanks to a turnover McKeesport started their first drive on the Thomas Jefferson 31 yard line. On the very first play Kemon Spell was off to the races and scored on a 31 yard touchdown run. That made the score 6-o McKeesport with 10:25 in the first quarter.

 

Thomas Jefferson’s second drive started out well and even got into McKeesport territory but that drive also ended on a turnover on downs . McKeesport went three and out on their next drive.

Thomas Jefferson started their third drive on their own 40 yard line and on the very first play Harrison Kolling found Colton McKerrow for a 60 yard touchdown pass which made the score 7-6 Thomas Jefferson with 5:21 in the first quarter. That was also the score at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter was certainly a wild one. Thomas Jefferson was driving to end the first quarter and it was finished off in the second quarter on a 1 yard touchdown run by Tyler Eber. That made the score 14-6 Thomas Jefferson with 11:16 in the second quarter.

 

McKeesport’s next drive started at their own 30 yard line and on the first play the ball was fumbled and Thomas Jefferson recovered the ball and ran it down to the McKeesport 5 yard line. On the first play Tyler Eber scored on a 5 yard touchdown run which made the score 20-6 Thomas Jefferson with 10:55 in the second quarter.

 

McKeesport got the ball once again and needed an answer desperately. On the second play of the drive Kemon Spell was on the loose and score on a 69 yard touchdown run. That made the score 20-13 Thomas Jefferson with 9:55 in the second quarter.

 

Thomas Jefferson’s next drive started at around midfield they got into McKeesport territory but that drive also ended on a turnover on downs. McKeesport wasted little time on capitalizing on that turnover. On the fourth play of the drive Jordan Stuvaints found Javien Robinson on a 41 yard touchdown pass which made the score 20 all with 6:o4 in the second quarter.

 

Late in the second quarter a pivotal moment in the game occurred. Thomas Jefferson was inside the McKeesport 5 yard line and on fourth down a pass fell incomplete which gave McKeesport the ball at their own 4 yard line.

On the very first play Kemon Spell was again off to the races and scored on a 96 yard touchdown run which gave McKeesport a 27-20 lead with 1:20 in the second quarter. Spell was the star of the game for McKeesport he had 296 yards on 18 carries.

 

Before the first half ended McKeesport had a chance to extend their lead after a Thomas Jefferson fumble but they also turned it over and the score at halftime was 27-20 McKeesport.

McKeesport got the ball to start the second half the drive started on their own 35 yard line. They marched right down the field and eventually Kemon Spell scored his fourth touchdown of the game on a 34 yard run. That made the score 33-20 McKeesport with 7:35 in the third quarter.

 

Thomas Jefferson got the ball for the first time in the second half the drive started at their own 33 yard line and after a big pass play they were at the McKeesport 31 yard line. After a penalty Harrison Kolling found Kane Eggerton for a 13 yard touchdown pass which made the score 33-27 McKeesport with 5:35 in the third quarter. Kolling was a big factor in the win for Thomas Jefferson he had 230 yards passing.

 

McKeesport started their next drive on their own 45 yard line and on the second play the ball was fumbled and Thomas Jefferson recovered. Eventually Thomas Jefferson capitalized on the turnover and scored on a 1 yard run by Tyler Eber which tied the game at 33 with 43 seconds in the third quarter. Eber was the other key player in the win for Thomas Jefferson he had 203 yards on 41 carries. “I love him being on our side that’s for sure, he’s just a great hard worker, he gets those tough yards” said Coach Cherpak.

 

In the fourth quarter McKeesport looked like it had a good drive going until penalties stalled the drive. Thomas Jefferson started their next drive at midfield and eventually found the end zone on a 3 yard run by Tyler Eber which gave Thomas Jefferson a 40-33 lead with 7:22 remaining in the game.

 

McKeesport started the next drive at their own 43 yard line and quickly got into Thomas Jefferson territory but on a fourth down play the ball was intercepted.

After that Thomas Jefferson ran the clock out giving them a 40-33 win over McKeesport. Despite a 13 point McKeesport lead, Thomas Jefferson was able to overcome that “We made mistakes but we find a way to comeback, I mean we really just found a way to come back and make some plays” said Coach Cherpak.

Next week Thomas Jefferson hosts Moon and McKeesport hosts Propel Braddock Hills.
