Quarterback Brady Cleaver accounts for four scores Friday night and defense pitches shutout

Berwick- A second quarter spurt that produced 19 points that propelled the Berwick Bulldogs to a convincing 39-0 win over a depleted Wyoming Area Warriors Friday before a large crowd at historic Crispin Memorial stadium Friday in a Wyoming Valley Conference showdown.

Due to some injuries, Brown University commit at wide-out Luke Kopetchny was forced to pay quarterback, though he made some strong throws during the several passes were dropped that possibly could have made the game nuch tighter than what it was. Quarterback Tyler Karcutskie played the entire 4th quarter as game was in running-clock mode.

After the Warriors stopped the Bulldogs on fourth down near midfield in the opening quarter, a fumble on Wyoming Area’s first play gave the ball back to Berwick and they did waste much time capitalizing on the turnover. Running back Gavin Galutia scored from 12 yards out making a it a 7-0 with 3:32 left in the first quarter. Galutia also had a run of 14 yards on the drive.

Berwick began another drive nearing the end of the quarter that pushed deep into Warriors territory. A 25 yard run by Galutia set the Bulldogs up at the Wyoming Area one yard line from the, just a couple of plays into the second quarter Brock Simms went in from a yard out and a 14-0 lead with 11:27 left before halftime.

Berwick increased their lead to 20-0,when Cleaver scored the first of his three rushing touchdowns, when he took the ball around left end from 4 yards out with 6:24 left n the quarter. Then both Cleaver and Logan Zapata had two big runs on Berwick’s next drive with Cleaver going for 22 yards and Zapata added a 15 yard run that setup. Cleaver scored from 12 yards out making a it 26-0 going into intermission.

Galutia did have to leave the game in the second quarter finishing the night with 67 yards on 12 carries due to an injury, the Bulldogs led the Warriors in rushing 166-28.

Wyoming Area tried to get something going on the second half kickoff a surprise on-side kick was recovered by the Warriors after the referees waived off a flag for illegal touching, but again the Bulldog defense stepped up stopping a fourth down pass near the goal line.

Cleaver again scored from four yards out following the turnover on downs to make it 33-0 with 6:48 left in the third quarter.

Then Berwick put the game into the running-clock mode when Cleaver connected with Gabe Decker from nine yards out making the lead 39-0

Wyoming Area had one last shot to get some points on the board late in the contest but a Karcutskie pass was picked off by DB Shiloh Escober stepped in front of the pass down the middle inside the Berwick ten to protect the shutout. The Berwick defense limited the Warrior offense to under 60 yards of total offense on the evening.

Berwick coach CJ Curry, was pleased with his teams defensive efforts, but knew they got away with the drops by the Wyoming Area receives that kept points off the board.

“Wyoming Area exposed some holes for sure that we need to clean up. We have a good fast downhill team in Wilkes-Barre Area coming in next week. We got some things to work but I am proud of the effort these guys gave tonight.” Curry remarked after the game.

Again Berwick improved to (2-1) on the season will have (0-3) Wilkes-Barre Area Wolfpack coming to Crispin Field next week looking for their first win on the season. WBA dropped a tough game Friday night to Valley View 17-7. Wyoming Area (1-2) will be hosting Mid Valley (2-1) from the LIAA. The Spartans shutout Old Forge Friday 14-0
