Holy Redeemer earns initial win of the season Saturday night

With several key guys out of the lineup,the Royals had to make adjustments in picking up their first win.

KINGSTON- In their game with Nativity last week several key components for the Holy Redeemer Royals, adjustments had to be made if they were to pick up win number one on the 2026 season against the Susquehanna Sabres at Wyoming Valley West Spartan Stadium. QB Brady McDermott used his athleticism and arm strength and Lucas Shrader move from wide-out to running back and Kevin Arroyo contributed in the backfield leading the Royals to a 26-7 win over the Susquehanna Sabers before a sparse crowd in Kingston.

Shrader ran for 54 yards and a touchdown, Arroyo, carried the ball 7 times for 18 yards in the victory.

After forcing a Saber turnover, McDermott connected with Josh Grochowski on a 34 yard touchdown pass to make it 6-0 the point-after hit the upright and fell back to the turf with 5:58 left in the first quarter.

Susquehanna gave the ball back to the Royals with a nother turnover, which Redeemer turned into points with a seven yard pass from McDermott to Arroyo at the 3:35 mark mark of the opening quarter, the try for a two-point conversion failed leaving the score at 12-0.

On the first play of the second quarter Shrader found his way to the end zone increasing the lead to 19-0 with 11:56 left before intermission.

Susquehanna scored their only touchdown of the contest on the second drive of the quarter when quarterback Owen Cook found Mason Keyes open in man coverage in the seam and Keyes took the ball to the house from 59 yards out cutting the deficit to 19-7 with 7:23 left on the clock before intermission.

There was no further scoring until the fourth quarter when McDermott cashed in from a yard out with 4:13 left in regulation making it 26-7. McDemott finished the game with 232 yards passing on 16-26 passing.

Holy Redeemer (1-2) will be on the road next week as they travel to Lake Ariel to face the Western Wayne Wildcats (2-1). The Wildcats will be coming off a loss to Wallenpaupack 52-14 Friday night. Susquehanna (0-3) will try for their first win but up against a formidable opponent the Lakeland Chiefs (3-0) Lakeland dumped Lackawanaa Trail Friday night 49-28.
