New Wilmington – Farrell improves to 4-0 with a hard-fought 25-14 victory over Wilmington on Friday night.

One season ago, Farrell rolled past Wilmington, 44-7 in mercy-rule fashion. Friday night was a different story as the Greyhounds forced the Steelers to play their first four-quarter game of the season. But in the end, the Steelers’ talent proved too much.

“They’re a great program, and that system they run, we have to be a little better there,” said Farrell head coach Anthony Pegues. “They had a real difference in time of possession. They kept our offense off the field. But we made the plays when we needed them. We were able to capitalize. You know, coming down here, it’s going to be a real educational game, and you’re going to learn things about yourself. It’s a great atmosphere to come and play.”

A balanced Steelers attack led by Aaron Pegues, Jason Marshall, Dorean Cain, and Timmy Jackson led the way offensively. Meanwhile, the Steelers defense did its job against the Wilmington Wing-T attack.

Losing a fumble on the opening kickoff wasn’t exactly the way Farrell wanted to start as Wilmington took over at their 33-yard line.

However, on 4th-and-goal from the 8-yard line, Marshall sacked Rowan Miller for a yard loss, ending the threat. The Steelers then drove 91 yards in nine plays capped off by Marshall’s 9-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter.

Aaron Pegues had a 56-yard completion to Jordan Hines on the drive.

Wilmington was able to respond with a 7-play, 54-yard drive, pulling even on Chase Mitcheltree’s 2-yard touchdown run at the 9:03 mark of the second quarter. Mitcheltree had a 25-yard gain on the drive, the longest play from scrimmage in the game for the Greyhounds.

The Steelers then responded, taking the lead for good when they drove 61 yards in six plays with Pegues tossing a 4-yard touchdown to Timmy Jackson, giving Farrell a 13-7 lead that would stand at halftime. Pegues connected with Jackson for a 45-yard gain on the possession.

“I think we had about five possessions tonight, no punts tonight, and we scored when we needed to,” Pegues said. “We got a good offense and a lot of skill. We’re working on some kinks up front, but they’re getting better each week, as you should.

Timmy Jackson caught four passes for 79 yards and a touchdown. Aaron Pegues completed 12 of 17 passes for 189 yards and three touchdowns while adding 28 rushing yards.

Trailing by six, the Greyhounds took the opening kickoff of the second half and ate up over half the third-quarter clock only to see Dorean Cain strip Cam Kettering of the ball and eventually recover the fumble at their 26-yard line.

“We knew coming into the week it was going to be a tough game and that we had to get through it,” Dorean Cain said. “You can never underestimate a team like Wilmington. They run a system from Pop Warner through high school, and they do it well.”

The play gave the Steelers the breathing room they needed as they drove down the field 76 yards in 13 plays, with Dorean Cain making an outstanding juggling catch in the end zone for an 8-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter to take a 19-7 lead.

“After I got that fumble recovery, it sparked our momentum, and I just knew we were going down and scoring,” Cain said. “Thanks to our coaches, we practice stripping the ball. I saw him holding the ball loose, and just stripped it out.”

Down by two scores, Wilmington was able to make it interesting when they drove 70 yards in 14 plays, with Mitcheltree scoring his second touchdown of the night on a 3-yard run, pulling the ‘Hounds within 19-14 with 3:36 to play.

Chase Mitcheltree rushed for 88 yards on 18 carries to lead the Greyhounds.

Timmy Jackson would return the ensuing kickoff to the Wilmington 21-yard line, where on 4th down sophomore Gavin Pettiford made a great catch in the end zone on 4th down for the touchdown that put the game away for the Steelers with 2:22 to play.

“They were starting to blitz and play cover zero, so we told Aaron to set your set and make a good enough throw,” Pegues said. “Our sophomore guy Gavin Pettiford went up and got that ball in traffic that pretty much iced the game.”

Farrell will now get set for a Thursday night showdown against Ursuline while Wilmington will host a potential postseason foe in Mercyhurst Prep.
