Brockway Upends Port Allegany for First Time Since 2017

The Brockway Rovers did something they hadn’t done in almost a decade, they beat the Port Allegany Gators. Using a strong run game, a tenacious defense, and two gigantic plays in the fourth quarter, Brockway knocked off the previously unbeaten Port Allegany eleven 27-12 at Brockway’s Frank Varischetti Field.
Jake Heigel, Brockway’s head coach said, “In the grand scheme of things, it’s another win. We got Redbank on the horizon. But I would be lying if I didn’t say it was nice to get a win against that team. It’s been a long time since we beat them. To get that monkey off our back was great. They’re a good football team. We might see them again.”
Brockway began the year 0-2 but have now back to back wins. “I could not be prouder of the effort. Our line played as a unit tonight on both sides of the ball,” stated Heigel. “We took two guys who played running back last year in Xavier Schwentner and Cash Butters, and moved them to the offensive line. I would be remiss not to talk about freshman Brock yale and what he’s done on the line. Chase Wolfe is kind of an unsung hero for us at the center position, and Blake Mowrey had a great game tonight at defensive tackle.”

Port Allegany came into the contest with Brockway as the highest scoring team in the state, averaging 64 points a game, but Brockway’s defense played really well sacking Brennan Fillhart 4 times and pressuring him numerous other times. The Rover ‘D’ also held the Gator’s potent running game to a total of 113 yards on 36 carries.
The game started fast for Brockway as they forced Port into a three and out, then proceeded to drive 83 yards in just 6 plays to open the scoring. A pass from Aiden Patton to Ben Bash for 42 yards was the big play. That got the ball to the Port Allegany 3-yard line. The next play Collin Weir scored out of the ‘wildcat’ formation and Caleb daugherty knocked home the extra point giving the Rovers a 7-0 lead.
Twice both teams threatened to score during the balance of the first half, but the defenses came up big stopping 4th down tries, or in one instance Port’s Liam Hawver intercepted a Patton pass. Brockway went into the locker room clinging to their 7-0 advantage.
Heigel’s Rovers came out barking in the third quarter. They received the second half kick and marched downfield, scoring on Patton’s 6-yard run to go up 14-0. Though the drive took 6 minutes off the clock, Brockway only traversed 53 yards using 11 plays, and all of them were runs.
Port Allegany finally got on the scoreboard on their first possession of the second half when QB Brennan Fillhart hit Kellen Veilleux with a short pass and Veilleux did the rest, turning it into a 39-yard touchdown. Veilleux is the real deal. He is very dangerous and Brockway did an excellent job not allowing him room to get loose. But he still managed to rush for 81 yards on 20 tries, and he also caught 10 passes for 145 yards.
The third quarter ended with Brockway leading 14-6. Brockway used a couple huge plays in the 4th stanza to put the game away. First of all, Patton found Daugherty open in a side seam and ‘Doc’ did the rest turning the pass into an 87-yard touchdown.

Secondly, Kolton Kahle stepped in front of a Fillhart pass near the Brockway sideline, broke free twice from tackles, and took the interception back approximately 65 yards for the touchdown which gave Brockway a 27-6 lead at the time. “Caleb Daugherty made an absolutely great play and we had a great block by Zayden Faith on the outside. Caleb showed his capability anytime he gets the ball on that play,” said Heigel.
The Gators rounded out the scoring when Isaac Postlewait plunged in from the 2-yard line late in the game to cap off a 60-yard drive.
Brockway will take their 2-2 record and travel to New Bethlehem next Friday to play Redbank Valley who is 3-1. Port Allegany, now 3-1, will be on the road again next week when they play at Bradford who is 1-3.
