Ryan Chappell’s Big Game Leads Central Cambria To Win Over Greater Johnstown

Ryan Chappell and the Central Cambria Red Devils ran all over the Greater Johnstown Trojans en route to a 40-13 victory at Trojan Stadium.

The Trojans had a tough time stopping the Red Devils’ run game, headlined by a big night from Chappell, who scored four touchdowns and rushed for 235 yards.

“We have five seniors on the offensive line,” Central Cambria coach Wade Klezek stated. “All of them are returning starters. They have such good chemistry and that continuity from last year, and they care so much.”

“They work so hard, and we know if we can get a push the way Ryan [Chappell], Mason [Pittsinger], and Jack [Dawson] run the ball, it’s kind of a three headed monster back there.”

Central Cambria got the game started with a seven minute drive, rushing 60 yards on 11 carries, finished by a three yard rushing touchdown from Chappell.

On that following kickoff, the Red Devils’ forced a fumble, getting the ball right back. The Trojans answered with an interception from Stephon Goodman.

Central Cambria got the ball back, but the Johnstown defense pushed even more momentum their way with another interception, this time from Elijah McLean.

Johnstown took advantage of this opportunity with a long drive of their own, ignited by a 33 yard connection from Ranson Goggans to Goodman. Later that drive, Goggans found Ronnison Edwards in the endzone for a 14 yard score, making it 7-6.

The Red Devils matched them, moving right back down the field, allowing Chappell to score his second touchdown of the night from four yards out.

After the half, Central Cambria quickly forced a punt and that set up Chappell to collect 66 yards on five carries, headlined by a 28 yard score.

Then the Red Devils recovered an onside kick. That allowed them to start chewing the clock with a six minute drive, which ended on Chappell’s fourth touchdown of the night. After that, Central Cambria recovered another onside kick.

Instead of Chappell, Mason Pittsinger found a wide open Avery Conner and he took it 37 yards for a touchdown.

Johnstown finally got a chance again on offense and Goggans connected with Goodman for a huge gain. A few plays later Cordell Porter punched it in from a yard out. Central Cambria wrapped up the scoring with a five yard rushing touchdown from Noah Ray.

“We had a rough preparation week,” Johnstown coach Tony Penna said. “Central Cambria is a good football team. You have got to have a full week to play a good game… We just have to be more consistent. They run a ball downhill and it’s physical. I think eventually they wore us down, credit to them, but we just got to be better prepping during the week.”
