Slippery Rock Scores 49-Straight, Beats Iroquois, 52-21

Slippery Rock – Slippery Rock scored seven consecutive touchdowns to overcome an early deficit and knock off Iroquois 52-21 Saturday night at Troy-Alan Stadium.

Iroquois made the trip down I-79 to Northern Butler County to take on the AAA Rockets. But in the end, big plays by the bigger school proved the difference as Slippery Rock won its third straight game despite a spirited performance from the Braves.

“It was a great win, a little sloppy in the first half for our liking as a coaching staff,” said Slippery Rock head coach Steve Monteleone. ” We went in at halftime, trying to fix our mistakes like jumping offsides. But overall it was a great win.”

The Rockets’ ground game pounded out 325 rushing yards, and big plays on special teams and defense led the way.

Iroquois had stunned Slippery Rock early on with consecutive 36- and 41-yard completions from Chase Cocolin to Noah Olowinski; the 41-yarder put the Braves in front 7-3.

The 7-3 score held at the end of the first quarter, with Zach Lasko booting a 26-yard field goal for the Rockets following the game’s initial drive.

Slippery Rock got the ball rolling in the second quarter as Derek Coyle capped an 8-play, 65-yard drive with a 15-yard scoring run. Shortly after, Cole Schwartz returned a punt 83 yards for a touchdown.

Two plays after recovering an onside kick, Logan Schlobohm scored on a 56-yard touchdown run that put the Rockets comfortably ahead 24-7 at halftime.

“We made some adjustments,” Monteleone said. “We decided to run power right at them, and a little bit of counteraction. We started to wake up and play football the way we can play. That was good to see. You have to give Iroquois credit; they came all the way down here from Erie. They played hard and caught us off guard.”

The Rockets put the mercy clock into effect with three more touchdowns in the third quarter. Aidan Shay scored on runs of 13 and 14 yards, with his 13-yarder coming one play after the Braves muffed a punt, while his 14-yard score capped a 4-play, 59-yard drive.

Aidan Shay rushed for a game-high 227 yards on 20 carries and three touchdowns.

“I definitely felt slow coming into this game,” Shay said. “I knew I needed to make a change. In the second half, the holes started opening up, and I started quicker. My line contributed to this; they started slow, and I was definitely getting on them. But in that second half, they stepped up and helped me get over those 200 yards.”

Schlobohm then intercepted a pass on a tipped ball and returned it 55 yards for a touchdown with 17 seconds left in the third stanza.

Immediately following a fumble recovery, the Rockets scored their final touchdown 24 seconds later on Shay’s second 13-yard scoring run of the evening, pushing their lead to 52-7.

Iroquois showed a lot of fight and scored two touchdowns in the final minutes, with Chase Cocolin tossing a pair of touchdowns to freshman Donovan Brown, covering 47 and 2 yards.

Chase Cocolin also had a 64-yard scramble and finished the night 15 of 31 passing for 239 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception, while also rushing for 63 yards.

Noah Olowinski caught a game-high six passes for 109 yards and a score, while Brown added three receptions for 56 yards and two scores.

Slippery Rock will now aim for four consecutive wins when they travel to Greenville Friday night, while Iroquois will look to bounce back when they travel to Franklin.

“I told these guys that we can’t play as we did in the first half with the next five opponents we have,” concluded Monteleone. “But if we play the way we can play, we can beat anybody.”
