Easton stuns Bethlehem Catholic with no time left to knock off Golden Hawks from ranks of unbeatens

Last second touchdown pass from Zahviay McGurn to Justin Cosover from three yards out with zeros on the clock end Becahi’s three game win streak Saturday night.

BETHLEHEM- Pandemonium broke out Saturday night at Bethlehem Area School District Stadium Saturday night. As the Easton Red Rovers gave the Bethlehem Catholic Golden Hawks the first loss of the season in dramatic fashion as Easton quarterback Zahviay McGurn found tight end Justin Cosover in the right corner of the end zone as time expired giving Easton an incredible 20-14 win Saturday night in a key Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Northampton Division showdown.

With scored tied at 14, the Easton defense held Becahi on fourth down from the Rovers 20 yard line with 1:45 left in regulation. McGurn completed a pass to wide receiver Amin Fideen for a pick up of 28 yards. McGurn hit Sean McPeak with another long pass setting up Easton at the Bethlehem Catholic 16 yard line.

A well designed screen pass to Jeffrey Thomas, coming out of the back field, set the Rovers up at the Becahi three with 20 seconds left on the clock and a first down as well.

After a timeout Thomas tried run the ball but got rejected by the Golden Hawks interior line. Easton the rushed to the line to spike the ball with six seconds left, Easton kept the offense on the field for the win or the tie and overtime.

McGurn waited until the last possible moment when the Golden Hawk defender slipped in the end zone and hit a wide open Cosover as time expired near the Easton sidelines as the team erupted onto field.

Thomas kicked off the scoring on the night when he cashed in from two yards out giving the Rovers the lead 7-0 with 1:54 left in first quarter. Thomas finished the game with 91 yards on 24 carries. He also made huge stop on defense when he chased down Golden Hawk quarterback Axel Burkhart after Burkart took off on a 83 yard quarterback sneak from his own one yard line.

Easton extended the lead to 14-0 on a Colby Oraschin five yard touchdown run with 7:40 left before halftime. It was Oraschin’s only carry of the contest.

Bethlehem Catholic cut the lead in half at 14-7 when Justin Martinez scored from three yards out with 4:20 left before intermission. Martinez picked up 53 yards in the game on 23 touches and hd both Golden Hawks touchdowns.

The Golden Hawks tied the score at 14 when Martinez bulled his way into the end zone from a yard out with 6:14 left in the third quarter. Bethlehem Catholic rushed for 188 yards in the game on 25 carries. Burkart was the leading rusher with 121 yards including the 83 yarder.

McGurn finished the game with 141 yards passing on 11 of 24 passing and the one score. Burkart completed 11 of 30 passes for 176 yards and one interception.

Bethlehem Catholic (3-1) will be home next week to face the William Allen Canaries (3-1) next Saturday. Allen defeated East Stroudsburg North 47-0 Friday night. Easton evens their record at (2-2) and will be home at historic Cottingham Stadium to face the Allentown Central Catholic Vikings (2-2) The Vikings shutout East Stroudsburg South 42-0 Friday night
