Hurricanes Blown Away by Whitehall

The Zephyrs used four takeaways and three Jeziah Gregory touchdowns to chug through Liberty at home on Thursday night. Gregory’s 50-yard touchdown dash one play after the Hurricanes scored helped Whitehall cap a 41-19 victory.

Following a quick Liberty three-and-out to open the game, Whitehall put together a 16 play marathon. The longest play of the drive was a 20-yard pickup from Gregory. The Zephyrs converted twice on fourth down runs to stay on the field. Whitehall employed a hrury-up offense at many junctures of the night, including early on, to catch the Hurricanes defense off guard. Gregory scored his first touchdown of the night running off the left side for 11 yards. With 4:20 to go in the opening stanza, Whitehall led 6-0.

The defense quickly got Liberty off the field again, forcing a three-and-out deep in Hurricanes territory. This time, Iskander Blanco came charging through the line and blocked the punt. Clifford Lowe picked the ball up and ran it in. Whitehall increased its lead to 13-0 still in the first.

Treyce Whitlow picked up a 21-yard gain on the Hurricanes next drive, which led to Liberty’s first trip across midfield. However, after picking up a first down on the Zephyrs 44, a deep pass by Gross went into double coverage by the Zephyrs. Rocco Fonzone snagged it, with teammate Henry Shultz right next to him. Two plays later, though, Dogmanits returned the favor, on the final play of the first quarter. Zyaire Davis, in tight coverage on the intended receiver, came away with the ball around the 24-yard line near the far sideline. He nearly ran it all the way back but was pushed out at the 2. Two plays later, Gross kept it himself for the short touchdown run, cutting the lead to 13-7 with 11:51 to go in the half.

Penalties dogged both teams all night long. A holding call went against Whitehall on their next drive, backing them up to their own 10. That was one of 12 fouls enforced against the home squad. Liberty got the ball back in good field position at its own 42 and made the most of the opportunity. Another pair of penalties, a personal foul and defensive offsides, moved Liberty within a yard of the end zone. Gross capped the seven play drive with the 1-yard keeper, his second touchdown of the night. That tied the ballgame at 13-13.

Whitehall was not deterred in the least, responding with an eight play drive. Dogmanits used his legs via a 20-yard keeper, and his arm, completing a 17-yard pass to Henry Shultz. Finally, Dogmanits stepped up in the pocket and fired down the middle of the field for a wide open Shultz in the end zone for the 29-yard score. With 3:35 to play before the break, Whitehall was back in front 20-13.

Kyle Hahn got the ball back for the Zephyrs one more time before halftime arrived. He was able to punch the ball out of Gross’ hands in the backfield, allowing Whitehall to take over on the Cane 30. Whitehall needed only four plays to score, as Dogmanits faked a handoff, kept the ball, and tossed a 10-yard touchdown to Stephen Fedorak.

Trailing 27-13 entering the second half, Liberty got the ball and was not going away quietly. Jayvion White was on the receiving end of a 42-yard pass down into the red zone at the 6-yard line. But Fonzone came down with a Gross pass in the middle of traffic in the end zone resulting in another turnover. Liberty turned it over one more time in the third–after forcing a punt , Henry Shultz came away with the muffed return and setup the Zephyrs one more time. Fortunately for Liberty, they held, forcing a 4th & 10 incompletion.

Despite driving deep into Whitehall territory again, the Canes could not finish. Iskander Blanco ran down Gross on fourth down. Whitehall turned their chance into a 12-play drive that covered 81 yards, capped by Gregory’s second score of the night from seven yards out. With 10:05 left in the game, Whitehall had a stranglehold on the game at 34-13.

The Zephyrs nearly had another interception, but it came back on a roughing the passer penalty. Liberty kept that drive rolling along. Carmelo Griffin caught a 37-yard pass in the back corner of the end zone to cut into the deficit, making the score 34-19.

But momentum was short-lived. After recovering the onside kick attempt, Gregory gashed the defense for a 50-yard sprint to the house to push the lead right back to 41-19.

Caiden Robinson came off the end to sack Gross on a 4th & 5 play at the Zephyrs 25-yard line. WHitehall had the chance to add one more touchdown to the scoreboard, but kneeled the ball out inside the Canes red zone. All in all, Liberty saw four drives end in plus territory, usually driving deep into the other end.

Whitehall improves to 4-1, having now won three straight. They will be in action at Dieruff next Friday. Liberty falls to 1-4 and will try to stop a two-game skid at Pocono Mountain West in week 6.
