Upper St. Clair uses strong fourth quarter to beat South Fayette

In a battle of unbeatens between Upper St. Clair and South Fayette it was Upper St. Clair that prevailed 31-7 in the out of classification matchup.

Upper St. Clair got the ball to start the game and the drive started at their own 25 yard line. It was a long drive a big pass play got them into South Fayette territory. The drive got inside the South Fayette 20 yard line and eventually Upper St. Clair settled for a 30 yard field goal by Cam Smith. That made the score 3-o Upper St. Clair with 7:29 in the first quarter.

South Fayette got the ball for the first time in the game but very quickly went three and out and punted it back to Upper St. Clair. Their second drive started at their own 35 yard line and was a very similar drive to the first one. The only difference is this drive ended with a touchdown when Josh Snyder found Andrew Gaither on a 8 yard touchdown pass. That made the score 10-o Upper St. Clair with 2:29 in the first quarter. That was also the score at the end of the first quarter.

Snyder was a key player in the win for Upper St. Clair he was 11 of 21 for 124 yards and also had 61 yards rushing.

 

In the second quarter South Fayette started a drive at their own 45 yard line this was after Upper St. Clair didn’t convert on fourth down. It was a long drive for South Fayette, after a couple of plays they were inside the Upper St. Clair 30 yard line. A few more plays later Logan Dedes found Jacob Bostian on a 9 yard touchdown pass. That made the score 10-7 Upper St. Clair with 5:43 in the second quarter. That was the score at halftime.

 

The third quarter was uneventful in terms of scoring. Upper St. Clair had a drive into South Fayette territory but ended on a turnover. South Fayette also had a drive into Upper St. Clair territory but that also ended on a turnover. Throughout the game Upper St. Clair’s defense was strong. “So the formula’s been all year long, let our defense do their thing” said Coach Junko.

The fourth quarter was where Upper St. Clair took control of the game.  First John Banbury scored on a 3 yard touchdown run which made it 17-7 Upper St. Clair with 11:52 in the fourth quarter.

Banbury was a key player in the win for Upper St. Clair he had 60 yards on 13 carries and had 1 catch for 15 yards.

 

On the next South Fayette drive they turned the ball over and Upper St. Clair started that drive in South Fayette territory. On the third play of the drive Luca Coury scored on a 10 yard run which made the score 24-7 Upper St. Clair with 8:52 in the fourth quarter.

Coury was the other main player for Upper St. Clair he had 110 yards on 15 carries. The Panthers had 280 yards rushing and Coury and Banbury were the 2 main catalysts. “They both, you know on most runs are going to break a tackle, on most runs they might make one guy miss, and they finish runs they love to finish with contact” said Coach Junko.

 

A little over a minute later South Fayette turned it over again and Upper St. Clair also capitalized on that turnover when Max Ligier scored on a 2 yard run making the score 31-7 Upper St. Clair with 7:26 in the fourth quarter. The fourth quarter truly was the difference in this game. “We played with tempo all night on offense, and I think the tempo eventually got to them, we started to get our runs started to be much bigger chunks in the fourth quarter, and I think that was a difference eventually we took over up front on the offensive and defensive lines” said Coach Junko.

 

Next week Upper St. Clair hosts Peters Township to open up conference play and South Fayette hosts Chartiers Valley which also opens up conference play.
