It’s week six of the regular season and time to take a look at what’s happening. Let’s do this by classification, starting with 1A then 2A.

1A.

We’ll start on the side of the state that has the most 1A teams, the western side. Districts 5-6-7-10. There are only 22 single A schools east of State College, however, that doesn’t mean they don’t play good football. At this point in the season there are 5 undefeated teams, however, throw in the one loss teams and you get 27.  Bishop Guilfoyle sits atop the rankings but it’s a precarious position. Newcomer Burgettstown is 6-0 and just took down Monessen. Clairton is still adjusting on the fly after a few off field issues and an injury to their top player. Then you have Washington, Monessen, Fort Cherry, Jeannette, Greensburg CC all battling it out for positions. It’s the wild, wild west in the WPIAL 1A class.

North of them in D10 sits Wilmington, Maplewood and Cambridge Springs. CS and Maplewood already played with the Blue Devils winning. We’ll have to wait for playoffs to see how this goes.

Key games: Clairton faces GCC & Jeannette to close the regular season. Fort and Burgettstown face off today, then FC gets Washington and Jeannette.

Moving east a little to districts 5-6-9, we find another big log jam. BG, Homer-Center (who has a habit of ending BG Streaks) a very good Mt. Union, Meyersdale, Windber Port Allegheny, Ridgway, Keystone, Conemaugh Twp, Mo Valley, Smethport are all knotted up. This too may go to the wire with all these teams spread out and in different leagues.

Key Games: Ridgway lost to Keystone by 3. They play Port in week 7. Mo Valley faces a monster task with 2AMt. Union in two weeks.  Meyersdale faces D10 Wilmington in week 7.

Heading East to districts 1-2-3-4-11-12. Let’s move quickly to start. There are only a couple teams in 1 & 12. Morrisville is 5-1 but their schedule isn’t the strongest. Jenkintown cancelled their season, Delco Christian same. Then you have Belmont Charter in D12. Alone. And playing 5-6A teams. They were strong last year but the league change is tough.

Lets move north to D11. Tri-Valley and Williams Valley are the class here at 4-1. They meet in week 10. Over in D3 it’s the Rollers. They’re 4-1 we get to see how good they are next week at D4 undefeated Line Mountain. This is a huge game to see what the future of the season looks like. In D4 it’s LM, Montgomery and Northwest area. The Rangers are a good story but have a weak schedule. Look for a rematch of that great LM/Montgomery playoff game.  In D2 it’s been tough sledding. Holy Cross, Trail and Old Forge have a combined 3-14 record. Winless Trail has has a brutal schedule and plays Old Forge this week.

Summary: It’s wide open in 1A

2A

When we look at 2A, right now we see a whopping 14 undefeated teams and 15 one loss teams. However, you have to start with Southern Columbia. This class is evenly spaced throughout the state but ultimately the title goes through Elysburg. The Tigers are rolling and face a monstrous 3A Mt. Carmel in the game of the week. A simple look at the PFN State rankings will tell you nothing is settled here.

Seriously, this class is LOADED so we’ll just throw out some key games:

Canevin v Seton-LaSalle week 10, Dunmore faces Riverside and Lakeland to close their regular season. Ligonier Valley closes with 4-1 Apollo-Ridge. Bellwood-Antis has Phillipsburg-Osceola tonight and BG next week. Sharpsville and Farrell will battle next week. Greenville and Farrell battle it out in week 7. Freedom takes on the Riverside Panthers tonight. Look out for West Catholic out of D12. They play a schedule loaded with larger, very good teams. They face 3A 4-1 Archbishop Wood in three weeks. In D3 look out for 4-1 Lancaster Catholic. They have a couple tough games with 3A Schuylkill Valley and Pequea Valley coming up.

This too is a wide open class and we will likely have to wait for week 10 to see who wants to earn that Trip to the Chap.
