Friday evening, J.P McCaskey opened their home football stadium for the first time in over two years, rebranding to the Penn Medicine Stadium at the Barney Ewell Sports Complex. Head Coach Todd Mealy adds to his resume with his first win in history as the J.P McCaskey head coach. Prior to this game, Mealy’s record as head coach of the Red Tornado happened to be 0-15. Asked what he’d like to see from his players in their stadium debut, “I’m hoping that, you know, the kids can show this week and the rest of the season with improved focus and improved maturity and discipline.” Nonetheless, they battled an unwelcoming rival in the Reading Red Knights, defeating them 39-14.

J.P McCaskey called for a tornado watch early as they forced a punt on Reading’s opening drive, turning that into a Robert Anderson 3-yd touchdown reception. This team allowed the crowd to get into it early and did not look back. Penalties halted the Red Knights drives often, despite McCaskey keeping them around with their own mistakes early. Towards the end of the first quarter, Reading recovered a muffed punt off the fingertips of McCaskey sophomore, Wesley Ray.

The Reading Red Knights found themselves already past midfield due to creating a takeaway. They inched into 4 down territory early on, with what felt like a statement to be made. However, the Red Tornado had other plans, holding the Knights to a turnover on downs on the 1-yd line. This goal line stand fueled the stadium, even after a dry spell came shortly. With 6 minutes left in the half, McCaskey recovered a Reading fumble after a few poor offensive possessions from both teams. The Red Tornado found themselves in the redzone, soon connecting with another sophomore, Robert Anderson to extend their lead to 14-0 at halftime.

Out of halftime, even the kickoff for the Red Knights was executed poorly as McCaskey started the half on their own 40-yd line. They made Reading pay with Sophomore quarterback Marlon Valentin connecting with his upperclassman Haneef Porter for Valentin’s third of the evening.  The Red Knights ran hard the following drive to attempt to fight back with a 3-yd rushing score to cut it to 20-8. Continued disciplinary penalties occurred for both teams, however being more vital towards Reading playing from behind. Jahsier Reeves ran in for a goal-line score with under 2 minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter to make this one 26-8 to open the 4th.

In the 4th, Reading responded with a Jahleer Nunn rushing score from 20 yards out. Soon after, Jahsier Reeves capitalized with another rushing score and to top off this historic night in J.P McCaskey history was a pick-6 from Haneef Porter to end this one at 39-14, via Reading forfeit due to excessive personal fouls and physical altercations.

The transfer student from Coatesville for the Red Tornado, Jahsier Reeves now is tied with his quarterback Marlon Valentin for most touchdowns on the team. As a captain, Jahsier is asked to lead the team and have a voice. “We played hard today, played as a team more, but we got it done and I’m feeling really great.” Jahsier feels he and his team can carry this momentum on the road next week against the Cedar Crest Falcons, while the Reading Red Knights stay on the road against South Western.
