Costly mistakes cause Pitt’s first loss of the season

For anyone who watched Pitt’s loss to North Carolina on Saturday afternoon, it was clear which team looked better. Ultimately, however, the team that executes the biggest plays and makes the right decisions in the most important moments wins games.

Pitt beat North Carolina statistically in every category, except for the most important one: the final score. The Tar Heels defeated the Panthers in comeback fashion, 21-17.

Despite outrushing UNC 150 to 20, having 10 more first downs than the Tar Heels, and controlling time of possession 36:32 to 23:28, the Pitt offense didn’t attempt many big downfield plays (especially over the middle) with backup quarterback Holden Geriner. Still, the Panthers had plenty of opportunities in UNC territory to pull ahead but couldn’t capitalize.

“They played a lot of deep coverage,” Head Coach Pat Narduzzi said after the game. “We got to make plays when we have opportunities.”

Pitt only led 10-7 at half despite rushing for over 100 yards and controlling 23+ minutes of the first 30 minutes of the clock. The Tar Heels have struggled to stop the run all season, including last week when Notre Dame avoided a potential upset by chewing clock and moving the chains on the ground.

But Bill Belichick’s North Carolina defense stopped the run on early downs in the second half, and the Panthers got a bit too pass-happy down the stretch. Holden Geriner, who was relatively efficient on the day, going 27/44 for 219 yards by throwing a lot of screens and checkdowns, threw two interceptions and was inaccurate in key moments.

When asked about a potential quarterback change, Pat Narduzzi expressed his faith in Geriner moving forward.

“Without question, we have a ton of confidence in Holden,” Narduzzi said. “First start, sometimes it’s not pretty. But I thought he did a nice job; we just have to be more consistent.”

What didn’t help Geriner or the Panthers’ offense was going 0-for-4 on fourth down in the second half. With the Pitt defense playing lights out, the Panthers could’ve settled for field goals multiple times, but their aggressive approach, play calling, and fourth-down execution cost them the game.

After defensive back Cole Woodson intercepted a pass in the opening minutes of the third quarter to set Pitt up at the Tar Heels’ 31, the Panthers opted not to kick a short field goal on 4th-and-2, and Geriner threw a jump ball into the end zone in double coverage, which was intercepted.

Pitt would go down 21-17 after the biggest (and one of the few) lapses from the defense on the day was a 75-yard touchdown from UNC QB Billy Edwards to WR Shamar Easter, and not taking that field goal in the third quarter forced the Panthers into touchdown-or-bust situations on their final three drives.

“It’s absolutely my call, period,” Narduzzi said about the decisions to go for it. “Put that on me. Maybe we should’ve taken field goals.”

After a tipped pass that cornerback Shadarian Harrison intercepted set Pitt up in North Carolina territory, the Panthers got in the red zone. But on 4th-and-2, Geriner missed high to a wide-open Blue Hicks, who leaped and got his hands on the ball but couldn’t come down with it.

The Pitt defense would get the ball back once again for the offense, and a punt return by Hicks put the Panthers at the UNC 39. But the offense again failed to score on its third drive of the half, which started in opponent territory.

On yet another 4th-and-2, Pitt tried to convert on the ground with La’Velle Wright, who had both of the Panthers’ touchdowns on the day. But the play was rushed and snapped before the 2-minute warning, and it developed poorly at the line of scrimmage. Wright got stuffed a yard short, and the turnover on downs virtually ended the game.

“It’s one game,” Narduzzi said. “Whoever plays in that [ACC] championship game is gonna have a loss. All of our goals are right in front of us.”

For Pitt to get to Charlotte for the ACC Championship in December without Mason Heintschel, they’ll have a lot to clean up offensively and fast, especially with a trip to Hard Rock Stadium to take on the vaunted Miami Hurricanes in two weeks. First, though, Pitt will travel to Boston College to take on the Eagles next Saturday at noon.
