Other Tidbits:
- Eli Nellis scored 4 touchdowns, all in different ways. That is quite a feat in itself. He ran a punt back 60 yards, he returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown, he caught a touchdown pass, and he ran for a score.
- Karns City’s offense racked up 704 yards, with 522 of them rushing. The Gremlins also used 10 different running backs who had at least 1 carry.
Game(s) of the Week:
- Moniteau and Otto-Eldred hooked up in a defensive struggle. A real slobber-knocker of sorts. In fact, despite both offenses’ best efforts, the defense of both teams rose to the occasion time and time again to shut down potential scoring threats. Finally, early in the 4th quarter the Terrors of Otto-Eldred broke the ice to lead 6-0. But the Moniteau Warriors responded and drove down field to tie the game late in the game. Aiden Kern booted what turned out to be the winning point when he nailed the PAT.
Upset of the Week:
- This is a slight upset in my book and also could be a game of the week. It involved two teams that have been at the top of the rung in District 9 football the past few years in Port Allegany and Redbank Valley. Port dominated the first half but squandered some scoring chances, but maybe it was Redbank’s defense who came up big. It depends on how one looks at it. A safety early in the second quarter put the Gators on the board. Then with 56 seconds left in the half, Port got their only touchdown and the 2-point conversion to go up 10-0. That was short-lived. Very short-lived as Redbank had a real nice kick return and Port was also guilty of a 15-yard penalty. That set the Bulldogs up at the PA 30. A couple plays later, with 17 seconds remaining, Redbank scored to trail 10-6 at the break. In the 2nd half, as the defenses kept the game low scoring, one knew a mistake may make the difference. And it was. Port fumbled a punt near the end of the 3rd quarter and RBV pounced on it at the Gator 35. That resulted in the Bulldogs scoring the winning touchdown early in the 4th and they held on to win 12-10. Port Allegany had nearly twice the yards as Redbank but in the end it is the score that counts.
