Protime’s Pigskin Ponderings – Tripping on D-II and D-III Football

Protime was thinking the other day of all the times he has tripped over the years.  From Protime’s toddler years to his grown-up years he always seems to trip over things.  In fact, during his last digger, he was heard yelling, “what a trip” as he went down.  Protime has tripped over his own feet, he has tripped over rugs, he has tripped going up steps and down steps, he has tripped over curbs, thresholds, extension cords, weights at the gym, furniture, you name it, and Protime has probably tripped over it.  But, the one thing he has never tripped on is drugs.  And that’s a fact.

He has taken great trips out West, down South, to the Midwest, and up through New England.  For high school football the phenomenal forecaster has taken trips all over the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and to 6 other states.  In other words, Protime has done some extensive road trippin’.

No more talk of trips, Protime’s teeth and toes are getting sore thinking about his last tumble.  This week Protime is pondering about Division II and Division III football, especially in Pennsylvania.  It is quite good football actually.  In fact, Pennsylvania Football News covers some of these games each and every Saturday.

If you are a big or little football fan, try seeing some of these teams, it will be well worth it.  Also, your local D-II or D-III team more than likely has a few local football heroes on their roster.  So, you may be familiar with some of the names.

Protime ponders taking a closer look and seeing how good some of these teams may be.  In the D-II division, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has three teams ranked in the Top 25, which is second to only Michigan’s four.  They are Kutztown, Slippery Rock, and IUP.  They are ranked 3rd, 7th, and 19th respectively in the poll Protime saw.  No. 7 Slippery Rock football travels to No. 19 Indiana (Pa.) this Saturday for a 2 p.m. kickoff in the 100th meeting of the series.  Kutztown visits Millersville Saturday at 2 p.m.  Kutztown has won the PSAC the past three years and four of the last five years.

On the D-III side of things, only Susquehanna is ranked at the moment.  They come in at #22 in the country.  But colleges from Pennsylvania who received votes for the Top 25 are Dickinson, Eastern, Franklin & Marshall, Ursinus, and Washington & Jefferson.  Come playoff time any of those teams could make a run.  Keep an eye on Grove City also.

Protime could write a book about successful players in D-II and D-III over the years who were stars in high school.  Some even were drafted into the NFL believe it or not.  Now he will look at two prolific quarterbacks from District 9 in recent years and how they have been successful in the college game so far.

Jase Ferguson, who led Central Clarion to the state 2A title game in 2024, is the starting QB for Clarion and has thrown for 1,593 yards and 14 touchdowns in 6 games for the Golden Eagles this year.  Ferguson has also rushed for 6 TDs to date.  He already has written himself into the top five of the Clarion record book in 2025 via average yards per pass and average yards per completion.

Then there is Redbank Valley’s all-time leading passer, Braylon Wagner.  The freshman plays for Washington & Jefferson and was named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Week for the second week in a row when he threw for 199 yards and 4 touchdowns last week.  He also ran for another score.  The week before he threw for 218 yards and 4 touchdowns.

This is just a sample of the talent these D-II and D-III teams have from around Pennsylvania.  Ferguson is the all-time career touchdown pass leader in District 9 with 148.  Wagner is third with 122 TD tosses.  Ferguson is second in D-9 history to Port Allegany’s Matt Bodamer as far as passing yardage goes with 10,525 yards.  Wagner is 4th with 9,666 yards.

‘Go see a local college game,’ says Protime.  You will not be disappointed.
