Saegertown – Saegertown jumped to a 20-0 first-half lead, then held on for a 28-24 win over Maplewood Friday night.
Starting 0-3 wasn’t what the Panthers had in mind coming into the 2026 season. But as they say, it’s not how you start; it’s how you finish.
That’s what Saegertown is out to prove as they piled up 413 rushing yards and didn’t attempt a pass en route to beating their Penncrest School District rivals.
“This team has come together well,” said Saegertown head coach James Wolfgang. “We’re young, but we’re building confidence. We beat Seneca and Northwestern, who weren’t supposed to. The kids are playing well.”
The Panthers sent three rushers over the century mark: Cru Scott, Matthew Shartle, and Riley Wilkinson each eclipsed it, with Scott leading with 166 yards on 17 carries, Shartle adding 128 yards on 17 totes, and Wilkinson chipping in 123 yards on 9 carries.
After receiving the opening kickoff, they wasted zero time getting into the end zone as Wilkinson took a reverse handoff 70 yards to open the scoring just 20 seconds into the contest.
As a steady rain continued into the second frame, Mathew Shartle capped an 11-play, 65-yard drive with a 14-yard scoring run.

Just over three minutes later, following a punt, Scott raced 62 yards for a touchdown, giving the Panthers a 20-0 lead with 4:32 left in the first half.
“The last few games we were able to score quickly and get up early,” Wolfgang said. “I got three backs that can run the ball. We only have a few seniors on the team, and our backfield allows for a threat from any direction.”
But what looked like a cakewalk was anything but. Maplewood found their footing, overcame a few penalties, and cut into the deficit before halftime when Mason Potosky caught a 47-yard touchdown from Ty Neely, capping a 12-play, 72-yard drive with 1:01 left in the first half.
Potosky had a monster game for the Tigers, rushing for a game-high 213 yards on 17 carries and catching one 47-yard pass.
Maplewood got back into the game when Potosky gained 50 yards, then, four plays later, LeeRoy Wolfgang ran in a 2-yard touchdown, cutting the deficit to 20-12.

The Tigers then blocked Jaxton Amy’s 24-yard field goal attempt and drove 85 yards in six plays, with Kyle Jordan scoring on a 1-yard run. Again, Potosky’s 61-yard gain set up the score.
Another failed 2-point conversion kept the Panthers ahead 20-18 after three quarters.
Saegertown got some breathing room early in the fourth quarter when Scott scored his second touchdown of the night from 16 yards out, capping an 8-play, 57-yard drive.
“I didn’t play our first three games this season; I hurt my shoulder,” Scott said. “We’re on a hot streak right now, and I hope we don’t lose again as we get ready for the playoffs. I dedicate our rushing attack to our offensive line. Those guys have been working really hard. It comes down to preparation; we’ve been working hard in practice. Staying disciplined helped us build this lead tonight.”
The Tigers closed the gap to four when Wolfgang scored his second rushing touchdown of the night from 16 yards out with 4:40 to play, capping a 3-play, 51-yard drive.
However, Saegertown’s rushing attack wasn’t going to be denied when it mattered most, as they ran the clock down to secure the win.
Both schools now stand at 5-3.
