It was a wet and windy evening at Bender Field at the Barco-Duratz Athletic Complex, but that didn’t stop General McLane (8-0, 5-0 in Region 5) from clinching at least a share of the Region 5 title as they came away with a 34-6 win over the Meadville Bulldogs (2-6, 2-3 in Region 5) in the Lancers’ second to last game of the regular season.
Junior RB Charlie Bennet finished with a hat trick of touchdowns, WR Luke Murosky hauled in a TD pass from QB Josh Caro, & Ben Cudzilo blocked and recovered a punt for a TD. Sophomore kicker Bowen Rock also contributed in scoring with 4 extra points.
The Lancers fumbled (but recovered) the opening kickoff, and the first snap on their opening drive went over Caro’s head for a big loss, but after that, GM controlled the game the rest of the way.
General McLane came into the game with a duo who were nearing 1,000 yards passing and rushing – senior QB Caro began the game 55/103 on the season for 842 yards for 13 TDs and 5 INTs, while junior RB Charlie Bennett had 807 yards on just 105 carries, good for 115.3 yards per game.
Meadville is a traditional power in Crawford County, and are just a few years removed from a deep run in the state playoffs. This season they have a freshman starting at QB while a sophomore is their leading rusher; QB Harrison Richards entered the game with 192 passing yards on 13 completions, while RB Leo Collins came in with 477 rushing yards on 75 carries.
Looking ahead, General McLane was set to face off against perennial 3A powerhouse Sharon in Week 10, but District 10 allows teams to cancel those games if both teams can come to an agreement. In this case, McLane is undefeated and is looking to reclaim the 4A Championship after falling short 16-14 in last year’s title game to Oil City, while Sharon is now 6-2 with their 48-14 win over Fort LeBoeuf tonight as the Tigers look to lock up either the 1st or 2nd seed in the 3A playoffs.
Now, McLane can head into their away game against Franklin (0-7, 0-5 in Region 5) knowing that they will get an extra week of rest before the playoffs. Franklin plays on Saturday afternoon, 10/17, away against Class 2A Union City as they search for their first win under new head coach Austin Ion.
For Meadville, they will conclude the regular season by playing 2 of District 10’s toughest opponents. They’ll host Class 6A McDowell next Friday before hitting the road up I-79 to take on Cathedral Prep in the regular season finale. With 7 teams in Class 4A Region 5, District 10 is currently projected to take the top 4 teams to the playoffs. As things stand, Region 5 looks like this…
General McLane —> 5-0
Cathedral Prep —> 4-1
Oil City —> 4-2
Harbor Creek —> 3-2
Meadville —> 2-3
Warren —> 1-5
Franklin —> 0-5
