Week nine is upon us, we’re almost to the end of the regular season already, quite upsetting I won’t lie, but hey this is where the good football starts to come in. This is where the playoff races heat up, the rivalry games are right around the corner, and the cold weather really starts to pick up. We’ve got two more games this week, one back in my hometown district of District 4, and then for Saturday we’re heading back down to District 3 for a top tier matchup between two very highly ranked 6A teams. Let’s talk about the matchups that lie ahead.
Our first matchup of the week brings us back out to Wildcat Stadium in Mifflinburg for the second time this season, as the Mifflinburg Wildcats play host to the Montoursville Warriors. These two have had quite the history the past couple years, each of the past two seasons these two schools met each other twice, once in the regular season, and once in the postseason. Last year the Wildcats and Warriors met in the District 4 3A title game, with Mifflinburg taking that crown by a final score of 35-12. Earlier that year, those two teams met in an undefeated showdown in week 4, but the Wildcats handled Montoursville on the road 35-7. In 2024, Montoursville took both matchups against Mifflinburg, winning on the road 27-20, and winning at home in the first round of the district playoffs 27-26. So it’s safe to say that these two teams know each other quite well, now this year is a little different than it has been in years past, for one this the latest that these two teams have met in the regular season since 2021 when they met in week 7. Another thing that is quite different is each teams’ top stars, for the past couple of years Montoursville was led by star running back Christian Banks who has since graduated, and for Mifflinburg it was the duo of Chad Martin and Landen Murray who have both graduated. Now there’s some new stars on both sides, for Montoursville it’s been junior quarterback Eli Eck who’s been powering that offense all year, he led the team last season but this year he has really made a name for himself, showing some impressive flashes and putting up new career highs especially in the passing game. For Mifflinburg, senior running back Landon Moser has built on a very good junior year in 2025 and has leveled up his game this year, backed up by a revamped passing attack led by sophomore quarterback Brennen Snyder who is having himself a very nice first year as a starter. These two teams came into the year as likely the top two favorites to win the district title, and right now Mifflinburg currently sits at the three seed in the bracket while Montoursville sits at the four seed in the bracket. This game will have pretty big implications on the playoff bracket, so this is definitely one of the most intriguing matchups of the week in District 4.
Our second game of the week brings us a little over 80 miles south near the capital of Pennsylvania, that is Rocco Ortenzio Stadium, the home of the Bishop McDevitt Crusaders. Bishop McDevitt this week is playing host to the undefeated Harrisburg Cougars, a battle between the top two teams in District 3. Bishop McDevitt currently sits at 7-1, their lone loss coming back in week 3 at home against another undefeated power in State College. The Crusaders also are currently ranked at number five in our 6A rankings, where does Harrisburg stand in the 6A rankings you may ask? At number two, just one spot below District 7’s Pittsburgh Central Catholic. One of the most highly anticipated matchups in the entire state, these two teams could also be meeting each other again in a few weeks for the District 3 6A title. Harrisburg finished the 2025 season undefeated and took down Central York for the District 3 crown, before falling the week after to the eventual state runner ups in Pittsburgh Central Catholic, finishing the season 13-1 and just one game shy of appearing in the state championship game. Bishop McDevitt competed in the 5A class last season, and unlike Harrisburg, after beating Solanco for the District 3 5A crown, the Crusaders made it all the way to the state title game, before inevitably falling to Roman Catholic. Now Bishop McDevitt competes in the 6A class with the likes of Harrisburg, Central York, Wilson, and Manheim Township, all looking for the district title, and this game could make the difference in the potential top spot in the district playoffs. Last season Bishop McDevitt fell to Harrisburg on the road 29-21, and the year prior they fell at home 35-33, their last victory against the Cougars came back in 2016 at home in a 28-12 win. Bishop McDevitt has been sitting in Harrisburg’s shadow all season, along with all the other District 3 contenders, and they have a chance to make a huge statement if they can pull off this win, and if they can do it, they would put an end to Harrisburg’s 21 game regular season winning streak that dates back to 2024.
