Archbishop Carroll’s defense shines in massive win over Ryan

Usually, Sunday football is reserved for the pros, but this week it was home to the Catholic league. The Archbishop Carroll Patriots played a spectacular game and knocked off Archbishop Ryan by a final score of 33-0.

Archbishop Carroll started the game with the ball and punted it over to Archbishop Ryan after getting nothing done on the opening drive. Ryan followed up the Carroll punt with a punt of their own; the punt was a short one, and Mattison returned it past the Ryan 40. Carroll got to work on their second-offense drive, but ultimately, after a bad snap, the Patriots had to settle for a field goal try. Chisnall’s 39-yard field goal attempt was just wide left, keeping the score tied 0-0 midway through the first quarter. Both teams would punt once more before the end of the first quarter, the final punt being a Chisnall punt back to the Raiders.

Freshman Quarterback Isaiah Boyd got the start for Archbishop Ryan due to the absence of BJ Scott. The Ryan offense continued their offensive struggle into the second quarter and ended up punting it back to the Patriots yet again.

Carroll was determined to pick things up in the second quarter, and that’s exactly what they did. The Patriots utilized Tyty Mattison in both the pass and run game on their first drive of the quarter. Mattison used his speed and explosiveness to pick up big chunks of yards and put Carroll into field goal range. The Patriots did settle for the field goal after Finlaw was shut down on third-and-medium. Chisnall’s 19-yard field goal sailed through the uprights and gave Carroll a 3-0 lead over Archbishop Ryan.

The Archbishop Ryan offense got a big return coming off of the Carroll field goal, and it looked like things may have been trending in their direction. The momentum quickly shifted after a few big defensive plays by the Patriots that forced Ryan to punt it back to Carroll again.

The Patriots immediately got right back to work offensively, especially Tyty Mattison. Mattison was still moving the chains and placed the Patriots in fantastic field position with just over 2:00 to go. Carroll was now inside the red zone, and RJ Finlaw decided to air it out. Finlaw’s pass to Tyty Mattison was caught for a Carroll score and Finlaw’s record-breaking 19th passing touchdown of the season, giving him the Carroll record for most passing touchdowns in a single season. Finlaw’s massive accomplishment in just his freshman year highlights the future of the Archbishop Carroll Patriots.

Carroll now led 11-0, and they weren’t done just yet. The Patriot defense forced another stop, and Ryan had to punt it back to Carroll once again. The Raiders punt was blocked and was recovered by Carrolls Ceasar Richardson. Richardson’s recovery placed Carroll in fantastic field position with little time left on the clock.

Coming right off of the blocked punt, Finlaw wasted no time getting points on the board for Carroll, finding Tyty Mattison in the left corner of the endzone for another Patriot touchdown. Carroll now led 18-0 with just 40 seconds left in the half. Archbishop Ryan knelt out the remainder of the clock and took things to halftime.

Here were my halftime thoughts

Archbishop Ryan had plenty of work to do, but still had a lot of time to do so. The Raiders received the second-half kickoff and let it go out for a touchback. On the second play of the drive, Isaiah Boyd was under pressure and hit from behind, forcing a bad ball lobbed up in the air near Khalil Sample. Sample came down with the interception and advanced the ball before going down.

The Patriots immediately capitalized on the interception with a rushing score off a read option from RJ Finlaw. The legs of RJ Finlaw are another huge weapon for him, earning him his title of a dual-threat quarterback. Carroll now led 24-0 with 10:42 to go in the third quarter.

Archbishop Carroll sent away the kickoff following the touchdown. Eli Acosta was set to return for the Raiders, but the play was blown dead as the officials determined Acosta signaled for a fair catch on the kickoff at the three-yard line. This was exactly what Archbishop Ryan did not need while already struggling offensively.

The Raiders took over on offense on their own 3-yard line and faced immediate pressure, forcing Boyd to launch an incomplete pass deep to avoid taking the safety on the first play of the drive. On the second play of the drive, the scorching hot Archbishop Carroll defense got through the Ryan offensive line and took down Boyd for a safety. Carroll’s defense continued to be dominant, and the Patriots led 26-0 and received the ball back due to the safety.

Both teams would turn it over on downs on their next offensive drive, with Ryan turning it over on second, giving Carroll the ball to close out the third quarter.

The Patriots were strictly rushing the ball prior to the fourth quarter and kicked off the fourth with a punt back to Archbishop Ryan. Chisnall’s punt was muffed by Acosta but scooped back up and returned for positive yardage. Archbishop Ryan did not continue the momentum following the kick return and turned it over on downs once again.

Carroll’s offense continued to dominate to finish off the drive, rushing the ball into the red zone and giving Finlaw the opportunity to find Caesar Richardson for the final Carroll touchdown of the day.

Time was dwindling for the Raiders, and they had to try to go quickly. Unfortunately for Archbishop Ryan, they did not get on the board and turned it back over to Archbishop Carroll to finish the game.

Archbishop Carroll will now look ahead to a 3A Championship preview in their final regular season match against Archbishop Wood, while Archbishop Ryan has their final regular season game against Neumann Goretti on the first.

After the game I met with Archbishop Carroll Linebacker Khalil Sample.
