The Greater Johnstown Trojans dropped their regular season finale to the Tyrone Golden Eagles with a final score of 38-12 at Trojan Stadium.

The Trojans lost their starting quarterback early in the game and from there, they struggled to move the ball down the field and that consistently gave Tyrone great field position.

“It’s a bittersweet thing,” Tyrone coach Jason Jones said. “I’m disappointed to see these seniors go. Disappointed it’s over.”

“It was good to finish .500 for our seniors. Send those guys out with a win, but I’d be lying if I’d say we’re going to be happy waking up tomorrow morning finishing 5-5.”

After forcing a punt on the first drive of the game, Tyrone quickly started to move the ball well. They got a couple of first downs, but turned it over in the endzone as Stephon Hill Goodman intercepted it for the Trojans.

The Golden Eagles responded with a turnover by their defense, recovering a fumble around midfield. From there, Tyrone running back Caleb Whitby took 7 carries for 48 yards and finished the drive with a 12 yard touchdown.

Johnstown was looking to match that to open the second quarter, chewing seven minutes off the clock, getting inside the red zone. The Trojans had two plays from the one-yard line, but the Tyrone defense held strong and prevented a score.

Tyrone used the momentum from that big goal line stand to move the ball 99 yards down the field. The Ben Walk and Mason Emigh duo connected three times for 77 yards, capitalized by a 30 yard touchdown.

The Golden Eagles forced another punt and got the ball back with little time to go before the half. With time expiring, Tytus Novak got set for the 43-yard field goal try and snuck it over the post, giving Tyrone a 17-0 lead.

After the half, a fumbled Johnstown snap on a punt gave Tyrone excellent field position. From there, Walk hit Emigh, who lateralled it to lineman Kyler Suhoney for the touchdown.

Johnstown would respond a few drives later with their first score of the night on a 15 yard run from Goodman. The Trojans would follow that touchdown with a big defensive stop, but that momentum stalled when Emigh intercepted the pass and returned for a touchdown.

Following that, Goodman scored his second touchdown of the game from five yards out, but Tyrone’s Colton Frye returned the following kickoff for an 80 yarder. Johnstown ran the clock out from there, ending the game at 38-12.

Johnstown will get a bye week before participating in the District 6 playoffs.

“There’s two of us left in 4-A and we’re going to go play,” Johnstown coach Tony Penna stated. “I got some seniors I really owe that too and it’s kind of odd when you have one win, but we’ve been a tough out over the last several weeks.”
