Wake Forest left no doubt about who the better team was on Saturday, rolling Virginia 51-7 and looking every bit like the No. 14 team in the country. The Demon Deacons controlled the game from start to finish, getting on the board first with a Ty Clark III 2-yard touchdown run and never letting up. Connor Calvert added field goals of 45 and 25 yards in the first half, and Wake took a 20-0 lead into the break. Virginia’s only points came on a late, meaningless touchdown, a 47-yard connection between former Central York standout, Beau Pribula and Da’Shawn Martin with under a minute left in the third quarter. Otherwise it was a near-perfect day on both sides of the ball for Wake.
Gio Lopez was superb, creating plays when it looked like there wasn’t much there, finding the open man or making the smart decision not to force it. He threw for 229 yards and a score on 13-of-21 passing, with Carlos Hernandez hauling in a 10-yard touchdown and finishing with 136 yards on 8 catches. Lopez also added 64 yards on the ground. The rushing attack paced the rest of the way: Jamar Searcy led the team with 78 yards on 8 carries and a touchdown, and Ty Clark III was outstanding, finishing with 48 yards on 8 carries and three touchdowns.
Virginia’s offense looked flat all day. The Cavaliers found a few chunk plays here and there, but failed to convert several fourth downs and rarely moved the ball deep into Wake territory, and those stalled drives hurt them badly. Pribula finished 20-of-29 for 212 yards, one touchdown and one interception, with Martin catching 9 passes for 119 yards, but he gave way to Holstein for Virginia’s final two offensive drives. The Cavaliers managed just 9 rushing yards from Sam Beebe on three carries, and the Wake defense had their number from the opening snap to the final whistle.
While this game was not the brightest for Pennsylvania’s own Beau Pribula, this is just one game of many. Stay tuned for a little feature on the kid from Central York with a more Pribula focused photo gallery.
