Yesterday afternoon I left Buckeye Lake, Ohio, and headed towards Bradford, Pa. to catch my first
Big 30 All-Star Charities Classic game between Pennsylvania and New York. The game was played at Parkway Field home of the Bradford Owls. I had visited this stadium with my good friend Sykotyk on one of our many trips together covering games around the country. I want to say how nice I was treated by everyone there I met, from the gentleman controlling the entrance gate, the guys in the press box especially the radio play-by-play guy. He even used my stats during his broadcasting of the game.
Things started out somewhat shakey for the Pennslyvania all-stars when Owen Trumball turned to hand the ball off to his running back, who was not there. This led to Trumball being forced to run where he was popped by Ethan Burton after only a two-yard gain. New York would make one of their few big plays on offense with 8:32 left in the opening quarter with Hunter Griffin picking up 12-yards on a nice option run. Facing a fourth and one later in the drive New York would covert when Clayton Rowland used some nice work by his offensive line. The drive fizzled out quickly after this and the Pennsylvania all-stars would strike fast with a 47-yard Zuke Smith to Ethan Smith completion. The drive hit a little speed bump when Zuke Smith was dumped for a 2-yard loss by Jordan King on another busted play. Zuke Smith would have the last laugh when he hit Taro Tanaka for an 18-yard touchdown. Jake Merry made this a 7-0 game with his P.A.T. with 2:06 left in the quarter.
Lucas McKenna looked to have a nice gain but Zazeric Bell nailed him holding the gain to just 3-yards at the 11:53 mark of quarter number two. The New York defense got a nice play from Ezra Stallman and Caleb Stromberg, who combined to stop Owen Trumbull for no gain. Trumbell recovered nicely a short time later when he connected with Alex Bon for a 20-yard gain. Facing a fourth and four with 5:57 remaining in the have Trumble showed his smarts and field vision with a 21-yard scramble to move the chains. The Drive ended with the talented Trumble finding Dillon Benson for the 5-yard score making this a 14-0 game after another P.A.T. with 3:58 showing on the clock. New York took a big step forward with 3:48 left in the half when Hunter Griffin hooked up with Rowland on a sweet 25-yard pass but on the next play, it was Pennsylvania’s turn to take three steps forward with an easy pick by Ryli Burritt on an underthrown ball by Griffin. Ethan Smith made a John Stallworth-like diving catch good for a gain of close to 30-yards. That was followed up with a 25-yard catch from Sam Kaul. Both balls were thrown by Zuke Smith. This became a 21-0 game after Bon made a very nice catch for the 28-yard touchdown.
The New York offense would make a big play, the only one of the 2nd half on the first play of the third quarter. Griffin used his feet to pick up 35-yards. From there the Pennsylvania defense would hold the New York offense to a total of 15-yards for the rest of the game. Trumbull would be sacked by Ethan Burton and Mekha Dorrough for a loss of 8-yards with 8:55 remaining in the third. The New York defense would never stop trying, it’s just that they were 100% outmatched in this one by the Pennsylvania offense.
At the 3:00 mark of the quarter facing a fourth and one on the New York 9-yard line, Kaul would wiggle his way to a 4-yard gain to move the chains. The drive ended with Zuke Smith trotting in from 6-yards out making this a 27-0 game with 2:31 left on the clock. On the ensuing New York drive, Pennsylvania would get a nice play from Bryan Schatz a sack on Griffin. Then on a fake punt, it was Nick Crisp and Ricky Delhunting stopping Griffin well short of the first down marker. The last big play of the quarter came from the New York defense with Bret Kryniski and Austin Noel teaming up to sack Trumbull for a loss of seven.
Just ten seconds into the final frame Pennsylvania went up 35-0 on a Trumbull to Donavan Fiscus 41-yard touchdown combined with a two-point conversion pass from James Davis to Troy Ayers. The remaining time in the game flew by with the running clock. Neither team would move the ball much at all during this time. New York tried to throw the ball but the Pennsylvania all-stars were up to the task, while the New York defense finally was able to stop the Pennsylvania all-stars potent offense.
