Archbishop Carroll Patriots Remain Undefeated

Patriots improve to 4-0 for the first time since 2010

Archbishop Carroll took down Neumann-Goretti 28-7 in their first Catholic League game of the year.

Here were my pregame thoughts.

The Patriots received the opening kick, and the offense immediately went to work for Carroll.  Multiple big rushes and a facemask penalty set Carroll up deep into Neumann territory on drive one. Inside the 10-yard line, Finlaw handed the ball off to Tyron Scriven, who got the ball punched loose, and Neumann recovered.

Just two plays later, for the Saints, Brian Palmer-King found an open receiver in one-on-one coverage for a big deep ball receiving score. Luke Rachubinski came up with the score.

Archbishop Carroll’s second drive fired right back at Neumann when RJ Finlaw found an open Ray Caswell for a Carroll touchdown. The Patriots had tied the game at 7 and made their way back on defense.

Carroll’s kickoff following the touchdown was good and put Neumann on their own half of the 50-yard line. The Saints offense gained some good momentum on their first few plays of the drive, but all momentum was soon to be lost. Carroll’s defense got to Palmer-King and forced a fumble that was scooped up by the Pats. Just three plays after the forced fumble, RJ Finlaw found the end zone on a designed QB sneak. Carroll now led 14-7 with 5:27 to go in the first quarter.

Following Carroll’s touchdown, both teams began to play some sloppy football.  On Neumann’s next drive, Palmer-King was intercepted by TyTy Mattison, but Carroll received two holding penalties on their offensive drive after the Mattison INT, and the Patriots had to punt. Neumann followed up Carroll’s punt with one of their own, and Carroll was back on offense.

Carroll’s next offensive drive began well but ended shortly when the Patriots were forced to try a 50-yard field goal on fourth down. Chisnall’s kick was just short, and Neumann took over. Neumann punted on their next drive, and Carroll turned it over on downs, taking us to halftime with the score 14-7 in favor of  Carroll.

Here were my halftime thoughts.

The Neumann-Goretti Saints received the ball to start the second half but quickly gave it away back to Carroll with yet another punt. Carroll’s next drive was going fantastic until 5 consecutive penalties ruined their field position and forced the Pats to kick it away. The Saints chewed up the remainder of the third-quarter clock and punted the ball away to the Patriots with 40 seconds left in the third quarter.

The Patriots kicked off the fourth quarter with yet another punt but got the ball right back when Palmer-King’s pass was intercepted by Khalil Sample. Carroll did capitalize off of the interception when RJ Finlaw found Caesar Richardson for a Carroll touchdown just a few plays into the drive. The Pats now led 21-7 with 7:57 to go in the game.

The next three drives consisted of a Neumann punt, a Carroll fumble, and a Neumann turnover on downs. Neumann’s turnover on downs occurred with 1:38 left in the game and set the Patriots up in prime field position.

To solidify the victory, RJ Finlaw found TyTy Mattison across the middle for another Carroll score, making the final 28-7 in favor of Archbishop Carroll.
