Berlin Brothersvalley Uses Strong Run Game To Take Down Juniata Valley

The Berlin Brothersvalley Mountaineers fired off all cylinders to defeat the Juniata Valley Hornets 25-14 on opening night at Center Rock Inc. Sports Complex.

Taking on the District 6 1A runner up, Berlin was well aware of the battle ahead of them. The Hornets featured one of the leading rushers in the area last season in Andrew Clark, giving the Mountaineers a tough task in front of them.

“Last week in our scrimmage we came out kind of flat, so we emphasized that special teams wins football games,” Berlin coach Dante Paul stated. “Defensively we knew that Clark was a heck of a football player. A lot of emphasis on him this week trying to limit him.

“We were able to contain him enough to ultimately get the job done.”

Berlin wasted no time trying to make a statement early as on the opening kickoff, Jake Philip delivered a big hit, forcing a fumble and Corbin Kordell scooped it up and took it in for a touchdown.

Juniata Valley later responded by putting together a game tying drive, led by Clark. The Hornets’ star rusher ran the ball 31 yards on six carries to tie it, finished by a two yard touchdown.

After exchanging punts, the Berlin defense collected a big sack to force a punt to open up the second quarter, setting up excellent field position. Carter Durst took advantage of that opportunity, making a few moves and taking it to the endzone from 24 yards out.

Both teams’ defense continued to battle, forcing punt after punt. That trend didn’t stop until Berlin’s first drive of the second half as Jaedon Brown ran for a 26 yard touchdown to extend the lead.

The Hornets continued to struggle offensively, which later gave Berlin another opportunity to score in the fourth. After a big 32 yard catch by Dawson Shaffer, Durst punched it in for his second score of the night.

With not a lot of time left, Juniata Valley gained some momentum, allowing Clark to score his second touchdown, but a four minute drive put them in a tough spot.

Berlin got multiple first downs and was able to put this one away in victory formation.

“You got to come out aggressive and hit first,” Juniata Valley coach Bill Musser said. “Obviously, a big play right away put us on our heels and it took us a while to get ourselves back together.”
