Berlin Brothersvalley Walks Off Northern Bedford In Overtime Thriller

The Berlin Brothersvalley Mountaineers walked off the Northern Bedford Panthers in overtime 30-29 at Center Rock Inc. Sports Complex.

After a thrilling four quarters, both teams scored in overtime, but Berlin, who defended first, went for two and put the ball in star running back Carter Durst’s hands. From three yards out he took it in for the win.

“I asked my guys and they said, Coach, let’s go for it,” Berlin coach Dante Paul stated. “I told the coaches in the headset, we win a ball game, we lose a ball game it’s not the end of the world.”

“If my guys are feeling confident, let’s go for it.”

Northern Bedford got the ball quickly forcing a fumble on the games’ first play. Not long after they moved the ball into the endzone on a two yard rushing touchdown from Erik Swanseen.

After exchanging punts, Berlin started to get their offense going, taking a long drive into the red zone. Brady Janidlo threw it up for Ryan Janidlo in the back corner for a nine yard touchdown, tying the game.

Berlin looked to have momentum after the following kickoff kept the Panthers inside the 20, but a flag on third-and-ten gave Northern Bedford a fresh start.

From there they marched down the field, converting six first downs and capping off the drive with a 15 yard touchdown from Trace Baker to Preston Horsh.

After halftime, the Panthers blocked a punt, setting them up in Berlin territory. The Mountaineers’ defense prevailed, blocking the field goal try from 26 yards out.

That set up a drive where B. Janidlo threw his second touchdown, this time to Dawson Schaffer, tying the game.

Northern Bedford responded with a long drive going 59 yards down the field. Baker attempted to sneak it in from the one, got stuffed at the line, and pitched it to Brett Cottle for the one yard touchdown.

The Panthers nearly got the stop they needed that would help them run out the clock, but a trick play on second and a mile for 44 yards gave Berlin a second life. From there, B. Janidlo finds R. Janidlo again for the game tying touchdown.

That took this game to overtime, where Baker ran it in for a go-ahead touchdown, but Berlin still had a chance.

Durst scored from a few yards out to get the touchdown, but then it was up to their two point gamble.

Durst took the snap, broke tackles, and lunged into the endzone for the victory.

“What more could you ask for on a Friday night,” Northern Bedford coach Garry Black said. “This is what high school football is all about.”

“I’ll have to watch the film, but I also 100% think, I’m not trying to skew the game, it was a great football game, but I thought his knee was down. We didn’t get the call there and I’m going to take this as a 29-28 win for Northern Bedford.”
