Bonner-Prendie Overcomes Offensive Struggles, Blanks Archbishop Ryan 29-0

OCEAN CITY – After disappointing losses last week for both Bonner-Prendie and Archbishop Ryan, the two teams met in Carey Stadium to see who would get back on track. In the end, it was the Friars who walked away with the victory, as they shut out the Raiders 29-0.

For most of the first half, this game was a lot closer score-wise than it probably should’ve been. The Friars struggled early on to take advantage of a Raiders team that just could not move the ball hardly at all.

The first points of the game came on a safety that went over the head of Archbishop Ryan’s punter – and out of the back of the end zone. After that safety, we didn’t see any points until just over four minutes left in the second quarter, where Mekhi Martin ran it in from 2 yards out.

Bonner-Prendie made quite a few mistakes offensively, especially in the first half, committing five holding penalties and turning the ball over three times. Noel Campbell also missed a few wide open throws, including on that first touchdown drive where he led Tarif Nixon too far on what would have been a walk in touchdown.

“There was definitely some wind here so I think a few of his balls picked up on that, so we told him to take a little bit off of it,” Bonner-Prendie Head Coach Jack Muldoon said. “I’m never worried about Campbell, he will always respond. As long as we’re executing the right plays, guys are on the right routes, he’ll get sharper as the game goes on.”

Campbell had two other deep shots that sailed just a bit too far before finally connecting on one. Late in that second quarter was when Bonner-Prendie’s offense was at its best in this game, scoring three touchdowns in the final four and a half minutes of the half.

Following that Martin touchdown run, Archbishop Ryan went three and out and went to punt the ball back to the Friars. However, before the punt could get in the air it was blocked by Aiden Clark, setting the Friars up with excellent field position that led to a touchdown connection between Noel Campbell and Neyo Jones from 5 yards out.

Bonner-Prendie’s last touchdown of the quarter was a beauty, as Campell finally connected on a deep shot, hitting Musa Bradford in stride for a 44 yard strike to put the Friars up 23-0 at halftime.

The Friars offensive performance was capped off by a third touchdown pass from Campbell, as he connected Tarif Nixon in the corner of the end zone. The touchdown extended the Friars lead up to 29-0 which is where the score ultimately stayed for the remainder of the game.

“I thought we got better in some areas, but again we’re not happy with putting the ball on the ground and losing out on some opportunities, probably leaving some scores on the board,” Coach Muldoon said. “We wanted our guys to have some points of emphasis, where we were running the football and tackling a bit better, and we did that this week. I thought we were more aggressive at the point of attack, we ran to the ball, we tackled as a unit, and when we do that it’s going to be a really good defense.”

Bonner-Prendie improves to 1-1 with the victory, next week they are back at home where they will face Springside Chestnut Hill Academy. Archbishop Ryan falls to 0-2 with the loss, next week they will face Pennsbury on the road.
