Brockway scored on every possession, except their last, to punish Maplewood 55-0 and win their eighth straight game on a chilly late October evening at Frank Varischetti Field in Glass Town, USA. And the last possession ended by taking a couple of knees at the Maplewood 7 to run out the clock and end the game.
Leading the way were two familiar faces for the victorious Rovers in WR Caleb Daugherty and QB Aiden Patton. Daugherty’s 4-yard reception early in the 3rd quarter sent him to the number one spot as the all-time leading receiver in yardage in District 9 history with 3,178 career yards. He broke the record set a few years ago by Kyle Hopson of DuBois. He also broke the Brockway career receiving yardage record held by Blake Pisarcik that was set just a couple years ago. Daugherty finished the game with 5 receptions totaling 71 yards. Two of those five grabs went for touchdowns. “Honestly, it (breaking the records) doesn’t even feel real,” said Daugherty, “I always wanted to make a name for myself and I always dreamed of setting records like this. It just doesn’t feel real . It’s truly amazing to me.”

“He’s a special player,” said Heigel, “what Caleb can do for us on special teams too, the way he can really set the tone on field position.” Daugherty also is the kicker on extra points, on kickoffs, and on punts. He made 7 of his 8 PATs on the night plus 3 of his kickoffs pinned Maplewood inside their 15-yard line. Another kickoff went for a touchback. He did not have to punt on this night.
Patten put on a show by going 11 of 12 passing for 214 yards and 5 touchdowns. The senior quarterback also added a touchdown run for good measure and thereby accounted for 6 of the Rover’s 8 touchdowns. Patton is now in 9th place as far as career passing yards in District 9 with 7,765 and he is presently 8th in career touchdown tosses with 84.

“I’m really happy with how we’re paying in all facets,” declared Brockway’s head coach Jake Heigel. “We want to be the best version of ourselves going into the playoffs. I think we’re at that point right now,” he continued.
None of Brockway’s 7 first half scoring drives took more than 3 minutes and none took more than a total of 7 plays. Their scores were on 3, 2, 7, 2, 1, 3, and 3 plays in succession. The second half scoring drive, and 8th overall, took only 4 plays.
Brockway led 14-0 after the first quarter. A little over a minute into the game, the Rovers got on the board on a Patton to Ben Bash 19-yard touchdown pass. Following the Brockway recovery of the fumbled kickoff return by Maplewood, Patton scored on a 17-yard run. Maplewood drove down field and threatened but the Rover defense stopped the Tigers on downs at the Brockway 12 near the end of the first quarter of play. That was the only time Maplewood came close to scoring. “Defensively, the way we swarm to the ball, that’s a testament to our defensive coordinator (Ben Donlin) and how he demands that,” said Heigel.

The Rovers put the game away in the second stanza by scoring 34 points. “Offensively, we made it a goal to be as diverse as possible,” stated Coach Heigel. Patton threw for three touchdowns and Collin Weir threw for one and ran for another as the touchdown parade marched into high gear in that second frame.
Patton hit Daugherty for a score, then Weir found Kolton Kahle for a score. Maplewood faced a 4th and one at their own 24 and gambled by going for it. Brockway’s defense held firm, setting up the offense in good field position. Patton’s pass to Kahle resulted in a touchdown to put the home team up 35-0 at this point. Another TD pitch to Daugherty by Patton followed by Weir’s 4-yard touchdown run sent the Rovers into the locker room with the game in hand at 48-0.

Caleb Daugherty (#11) of Brockway finds a seam when he cut back in scoring his second touchdown.
With the running clock as a result of the Mercy Rule, each team only had two possessions in the second half. Brockway took it to the house in the third quarter when Patton found Kahle for a 36-yard touchdown. That was Kahle’s 4th catch of the night. Those four catches resulted in 3 TDs and 115 yards receiving.
The Tigers were led by their big, bruising running back/quarterback, Kyle Jordan. He ran the rock 23 times for 118 yards which was the vast majority of Maplewood’s total yardage of 156 for the contest.
Both teams are in their respective district playoffs. Maplewood in Class A in District 10 and Brockway in Class A in District 9. Brockway’s record stands at 8-2 while Maplewood dropped to 6-4. Neither team knows their opponent yet as the seedings will be this weekend.
Brockway’s band did a real nice job at halftime to entertain the crowd on hand.
