The Cambria Heights Highlanders won the Heritage Conference by defeating the Homer Center Wildcats by a final score of 28-14 at Memorial Field.
The Highlanders entered the second half down 14-7, but took over the second half by shutting them out and scoring 21 points.
“We’re a second half team,” Cambria Heights coach Jarrod Lewis said. “I didn’t like the way we performed in the first half. I thought they were a more physical team. They were more aggressive and credit to them. They played well and we knew it was going to be a test this week.”
“That’s what a championship game looks like.”
Cambria Heights got off to a fast start, forcing a three-and-out. Their offense wasted no time after that as Nolan Clawson launched a deep ball to Brayden DeArmitt and he hauled it in for the 63 yard touchdown.
After exchanging punts and turnover on downs for four straight drives, Homer Center finally got their offense going. Carson Arone hit Brady Frazer on the screen and he went the distance, going 51 yards to tie the game.
Once the second quarter began, both defenses made clutch plays to prevent scores. Homer Center forced a fumble and recovered on a deep drive into their territory. They went down to the Highlanders five yard line, but DeArmitt intercepted a pass in the endzone.
Cambria Heights looked to have momentum moving down the field, but Arone picked off a pass and gave a long 67 yard return. The play after, Gabe Cobaugh punched it in from 26 yards out, giving the Wildcats the lead.
The Highlanders attempted a 41 yard field goal to conclude the first half, but it was short.
After the half, Cambria Heights got off to a strong start, but on a crucial play, a Wildcat defender was called for a late hit penalty and then an unsportsmanlike conduct followed for 30 penalty yards after the play.
Quickly after, Clawson punched it into the endzone from eight yards out to tie the game.
“I’m questioning a penalty on their sideline,” Homer Center coach Greg Page said. “You know, the crowd starts yelling, so the flag comes out, and I have to be better. And I wasn’t.
So it had another 15 yards on, and next thing you know, the game’s tied.”
From there, Cambria Heights took full control. They forced a punt and then DeArmitt broke the tie with a 45 yard rushing touchdown.
Then, Clawson comes down with a remarkable one-handed interception around midfield. Shortly after, Clawson extended the lead with a 15 yard touchdown run, which just about wrapped up this game.
“We challenged him at halftime to make a big play and he did,” coach Lewis said. “That’s when you challenge your best players. At the end of the day, your best players have to make plays and we didn’t do so much in the first half, but we did in the second half so I’ll credit them for that.”
The Highlanders got a stop and ran out the last six minutes to clinch the Heritage Conference.
Cambria Heights remains undefeated and the one seed in the District 6 Class 3A playoffs. A win next week over West Shamokin should clinch them that spot.
As for Homer Center, they sit at 7-2 in the two seed in the District 6 Class 1A playoffs. A win over Portage in week 10 should cement them in that spot with a one game lead over Bishop McCort and Moshannon Valley.
