Morris Donzo finds the end zone three times, propels O’Hara to victory

The Cardinal O’Hara Lions took down the West Catholic Burrs by a final score of 38-0 on Friday Night.

Here were my pregame thoughts.

Cardinal O’Hara won the toss and elected to defer, giving the Burrs the first offensive opportunity of the game. West Catholics first drive not only took off a major chunk of the first-quarter game clock, but the Burrs found themselves on the O’Hara side of the field. Unfortunately for West Catholic, 3 consecutives penalties backed them up 25 yards and forced them to punt. O’Hara would follow up West Catholics first drive with a punt of their own.  West Catholic capped off the punting series with the third straight punt of the first quarter on their second drive of the game.

The Lions took over following the West Catholic punt and immediately rushed their way into great field position. Morris Donzo found an open hole for a big gain and into West Catholic Territory. With 14.3 seconds left in the first quarter, Braylon Harris takes the snap, and it gets away from him; West Catholic jumps on the ball and takes over after the fumble.

With all the momentum going West Catholics’ way heading into the second quarter, things soon plummeted. On the first play after the fumble recovery, Josiah Everett fired over the middle; when his receiver fell, the ball was tipped in the air, landing in the hands of Emilio Martinez, who took it 69 yards for an O’Hara pick-six touchdown.

West Catholic got the offense rolling on their next offensive drive but shortly faced a 4th down at the 50-yard line. Everett’s pass was incomplete, and the Lions took over on downs.

The very next play, Braylon Harris handed the ball off to Morris Donzo, who found the open holes and the end zone for a big 50-yard rushing score.  The Lions now led 13-0 with 7:57 left in the half, and the momentum had completely shifted in their favor.

West Catholics offenssive struggles continued on their next drive. Following a reception by Tyree Wilkens, Josiah Everett throws it right into the arms of Simon Horta for another Lions pick-six. West Catholic punted once again following the Horta pick six and O’Hara had the ball with 4:40 left in the half and already leading 19-0.

The Lions started off their final drive of the half with a pair of rushes and one big rush up the middle, inching O’Hara closer to the goal line. Braylon Harris fired a deep ball that was incomplete but was ruled pass interference and put O’Hara on the five-yard line with under two minutes to go in the half. The Lions continued handing the ball off and pushing the pile until they finally got a touchdown rush from Charles Goldsborough. The score was now 26-0 in favor of O’Hara.

The Burrs just ran out the clock and took the game into halftime with O’Hara leading by 26.

Here were my halftime thoughts.

Coming out of the half, O’Hara started with the ball and picked up right where they left off. On the second play of the drive, Braylon Harris found Simon Horta for a massive gain, setting the Lions up on the five-yard line. Harris handed the ball off to Morris Donzo, who broke through for his second touchdown of the game. The PAT was blocked, and the Lions led 32-0.

Following the O’Hara score, a chain of turnovers and punts began, with West Catholic turning it over on downs twice, Braylon Harris being intercepted, O’Hara having to punt, and finally wrapping up with a fumble that was recovered by the Lions.

With the ball at the 50 yard line and time dwindling down in the game O’Hara was set on handing the ball off on almost every single play. The Lions rushed their way down the field and capped off a fantastic offensive night with Morris Donzo’s third touchdown rush of the game. The PAT was blocked and the Lions led 38-0.

Neither team would get anything else going offensively and the game would conclude with a final score of 38-0 in favor of the Lions.

Here were my postgame thoughts.

Following the game, I got to talk with Morris Donzo of Cardinal O’Hara. Donzo scored three touchdowns and rushed phenomenally against his former team, West Catholic.
