The Central Cambria Red Devils’ offense took full control against the Chestnut Ridge Lions, leading them to a 20-9 victory at Central Cambria Stadium.
Central Cambria ran over 60 offensive snaps in this game, keeping Chestnut Ridge to just 31 offensive plays. Even though that didn’t result in a very high score, it paid dividends, preventing the Lions from getting many chances on offense.
“The way the line was playing, where we were running the football with Ryan [Chappell] and Jack [Dawson], we would get into third and very manageable,” Central Cambria coach Wade Klezek stated.
“Then you get that first down and the clock was just ticking. We kept control and just kept pounding it. It was just a methodical, grinded out kind of offensive attack.”
The Red Devils wasted no time at all jumping on the board, running right down the field on the first drive. That allowed star running back Ryan Chappell to finish the drive with a one yard score.
Following that score, Chestnut Ridge got great field position following that possession courtesy of an onside kick attempt from Central Cambria. With that opportunity, they marched down, but faced a fourth and long.
Joshua Howsare drilled the field goal from 28 yards out, cutting the lead to four.
After a few punts by both teams, Central Cambria’s offense started to pick up again. A big 38 yard completion from Mason Pittsinger to Ridge Kutchman allowed Chappell to run it in for his second touchdown, this time from five yards out.
Immediately after the score, the Lions attempted a trick play, but it was intercepted by Kutchman. The Red Devils nearly got on the board again before the half, but the field goal try was blocked by Chestnut Ridge.
Following halftime, the Red Devils forced a punt and got the ball right back. With that, they ate 10 minutes off the clock and finished that long drive with Chappell’s third score of the night.
The Lions would find the end zone inside the last two minutes of the game on a one yard rush from Jayden Imler, which concluded the scoring at 20-9.
“They controlled the line of scrimmage most of the night and we just got to play more physical,” Chestnut Ridge coach Max Shoemaker said. “Congratulations to them, they’ve done a nice job.”
