Central Cambria Runs Past Bedford In Tight 21-13 LHAC Matchup

The Central Cambria Red Devils ran behind a strong offensive line performance to take down the Bedford Bison 21-13 at Bisons Stadium.

“Whether it was our line providing holes, and Ryan [Chappell] finishing runs, whoever it was, we had a guy step up in a key moment,” Central Cambria coach Wade Klezek said. “I’m proud of them, they didn’t play scared and didn’t play like not to lose. They wanted to win this game.”

Star running back Ryan Chappell ran for 168 yards and accounted for two touchdowns, leading the Devils to victory, but he gives all the credit to the guys up front.

“They just got a push, like a one yard push, and it just gave me an opportunity to find a hole and just get my head down and get three, four, or five [yards],” Chappell stated. “We just chipped away at it and just kept going. We didn’t stop.”

After exchanging punts to open up the game, the Red Devils earned strong field position and capitalized with a rushing touchdown from Ryan Chappell. The senior back took the handoff 8 yards.

Two plays later, Central Cambria added even more momentum as Ridge Kutchman intercepted a pass, giving the Red Devils excellent field position again.

Bedford’s defense held up for a few plays, forcing a fourth down and medium. Mason Pittsinger dropped back and aired one long for Kutchman and he hauled it in with a defender on him for a 30 yard touchdown. Pittsinger ran it in for the two point conversion right after.

The Bisons weren’t going away after falling down two scores. Junior back Carter Kozielec took a handoff, made a few moves and cut the Red Devils’ lead in half with a 58 yard touchdown.

After a quick stop, Bedford started to drive down the field again, but a fumble spoiled their drive and Central Cambria attempted to score again before halftime, but they ran out the clock without any more points.

Following halftime, Bedford wasted no time going down the field.  The Bisons went 71 yards in five plays and scored off a seven yard run from Kozielec, but the Red Devils blocked the extra point.

Then Central Cambria took a nine minute drive inside Bedford’s ten yard line, but the Bisons forced a turnover on downs. The Red Devils got the ball back and Chappell ran for a 37 yard touchdown to give them a 21-13 lead.

Bedford drove down into the red zone, but Central Cambria got a clutch interception by Brody Makosy, sealing the game and sending the Red Devils to 2-1.

“For the most part, we were able to control them outside of a few plays here and there,” Bedford coach Kevin Steele said. “Our issue was more on our offensive side, just turning the ball over and not being able to score some more points.”
