Columbia Opens Season With 27-7 Win Over J.P McCaskey, Earns 500th Program Victory

On Friday’s humid evening, the Columbia Crimson Tide earned their first win of the season and the 500th victory in program history, defeating the J.P McCaskey Red Tornado 27-7. Senior quarterback Cameron McClair led the way with four total touchdowns, throwing for three and rushing for one.

J.P McCaskey elected to defer the coin toss and Columbia quickly capitalized. Quarterback Cameron McClair found junior wideout Kam’Rai Nichols over the middle for the opening touchdown, putting Columbia ahead 7-0. The Red Tornado responded by driving down the field, which resulted in a fumble lost by Senior halfback Jahsier Reeves near the Crimson Tide end zone.

Columbia proceeded to score off this turnover, McClair completed a touchdown pass in the back of the endzone to his Junior tight end, Alex Morris to extend the lead to 14-0. After some offensive inconsistencies for the Red Tornado, Columbia found themselves in prime position with just under 2 minutes remaining in the first half but McCaskey’s defense held strong and forced an interception by Senior, Haneef Porter. After the turnover, McCaskey is forced to punt and Columbia misses a chip shot field with 7 seconds remaining in the first half.

 The theme continued as the Red Tornado could not find an offensive rhythm, struggling to sustain drives for the vast majority of this game. To open the half, McCaskey punts and Cameron McClair gets right back to work marching down the field and soon finding Kam’Rai Nichols for the second time to extend the Crimson Tide lead to 21-0. On the very next drive McCaskey Senior, Jahsier Reeves rushes in for the touchdown to cut the lead to 21-7. Soon after, Columbia found themselves in possession again, only this time the Red Tornado intercepted the senior quarterback on a go route. The Red Tornado could not capitalize and turned the ball over on downs, shortly after.

 

As the Tide wound the clock down by relying on the run, Cameron McClair was able to find the endzone himself on a quarterback sneak with 44 seconds remaining. The lead was now 27-7, after a missed extra point attempt from Columbia. After a rough night, McCaskey continued to battle and with 44 seconds remaining, they sought an opportunity for their second time, looking for any sliver of momentum going into next week. Unfortunately, their efforts came up short after a second fumble from Jahsier Reeves ended their final possession.The Columbia Crimson Tide held on for a 27-7 victory, reaching the milestone of 500 program victories.
